Biography of John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester 1598-1675

Paternal Family Tree: Paulett

Maternal Family Tree: Aoife NI Diarmait Macmurrough Countess Pembroke and Buckingham 1145-1188

On 28th February 1587 [his father] William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester (age 28) and [his mother] Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Cecil 1st Earl Exeter (age 44) and [his grandmother] Dorothy Neville Countess Exeter (age 39). He the son of [his grandfather] William Paulet 3rd Marquess Winchester (age 55) and [his grandmother] Agnes Howard Marchioness Winchester (age 52). They were half fourth cousins.

Around 1598 John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester was born to William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester (age 39) and Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester.

In October 1614 [his mother] Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester died.

Letters of John Chamberlain Volume 2 315. [30th January 1619] On Wensday divers were censured in the Star-chamber for building contrarie to the Kings proclamation; which was so far inforct that the Lord Cheife Justice (age 56) saide that yt was in effect, and had the nature of an act of parliament: they were fined at a yeares true valew, and to pull downe theyre houses, or els to build them anew according to order: now that these have led the daunce, all the rest that have built since the first proclamation must follow, or compound, which wold prove too great a matter to graunt my Lord of Arundell (who is saide to have the penaltie) though he have need of yt. The same day there was some entrance into the Lady of Excesters busines and order taken to abbreviat and cut of superfluous and impertinent matter and so make yt more fit for the Kings hearing, in which course there was some contesting twixt Sir Ed: Cooke, and the two Cheife Justices, [Henry Montagu 1st Earl Manchester and Henry Hobart 1st Baronet (age 59)] who are still observ'd to incline to the other side: the Lady of Excester went that day to the Star-chamber accompanied by the countesses of Arundell and Bedford, and a comitiva of I know not how many Ladies more to the number of almost thirty coaches, but whether she appeared in the court or no I cannot certainly learne. Secretarie Lake and his followers continue still confident, and some say the Lady Roos (age 19) was there likewise with her litle troupe: the speach goes that she is to marrie with the Lord John Pawlet (age 21) another grand-child of the [his grandfather] earle of Excesters (age 76), and heire in apparance to the marquis of Winchester.

On 18th December 1622 John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester (age 24) and Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester were married. She the daughter of Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage (age 36) and Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers (age 41). He the son of William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester (age 63) and Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester. They were fourth cousins.

Before 1626 [his brother-in-law] John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers (age 22) and Catherine Parker (age 28) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage (age 39) and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers (age 44).

On 4th November 1626 Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers (age 61) was created 1st Earl Rivers with a special remainder to his grandson [his brother-in-law] John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers (age 23). Mary Kitson Countess Rivers (age 59) by marriage Countess Rivers.

On 4th February 1629 [his father] William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester (age 70) died. His son John (age 31) succeeded 5th Marquess Winchester, 5th Earl Wiltshire, 5th Baron St John. [his wife] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

Around 1630 [his son] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton was born to John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester (age 32) and [his wife] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester.

In 1631 [his wife] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester died in childbirth. Her epitaph was written by John Milton (age 22)...

An Epitaph on the Marchioness of Winchester

This rich Marble doth enterr

The honour'd Wife of Winchester (age 33),

A [his father-in-law] Viscount's (age 45) daughter, an Earls (age 66) heir,

Besides what her vertues fair

Added to her noble birth,

More then she could own from Earth.

Summers three times eight save one

She had told, alas too soon,

After so short time of breath,

To house with darknes, and with death.

Yet had the number of her days

Bin as compleat as was her praise,

Nature and fate had had no strife

In giving limit to her life.

Her high birth, and her graces sweet,

Quickly found a lover meet;

The Virgin quire for her request

The God that sits at marriage feast;

He at their invoking came

But with a scarce-wel-lighted flame;

And in his Garland as he stood,

Ye might discern a Cipress bud.

Once had the early Matrons run

To greet her of a lovely son,

And now with second hope she goes, [ 25 ]

And calls Lucina to her throws;

But whether by mischance or blame

Atropos for Lucina came;

And with remorsles cruelty,

Spoil'd at once both fruit and tree:

The haples Babe before his birth

Had burial, yet not laid in earth,

And the languisht Mothers Womb

Was not long a living Tomb.

So have I seen som tender slip

Sav'd with care from Winters nip,

The pride of her carnation train,

Pluck't up by som unheedy swain,

Who onely thought to crop the flowr

New shot up from vernall showr;

But the fair blossom hangs the head

Side-ways as on a dying bed,

And those Pearls of dew she wears,

Prove to be presaging tears

Which the sad morn had let fall

On her hast'ning funerall.

Gentle Lady may thy grave

Peace and quiet ever have;

After this thy travail sore

Sweet rest sease thee evermore,

That to give the world encrease,

Shortned hast thy own lives lease,

Here besides the sorrowing

That thy noble House doth bring,

Here be tears of perfect moan

Weept for thee in Helicon,

And som Flowers, and som Bays,

For thy Hears to strew the ways,

Sent thee from the banks of Came,

Devoted to thy vertuous name;

Whilst thou bright Saint high sit'st in glory,

Next her much like to thee in story,

That fair Syrian Shepherdess,

Who after yeers of barrennes

The highly favour'd Joseph bore

To him that serv'd for her before,

And at her next birth much like thee,

Through pangs fled to felicity,

Far within the boosom bright

Of blazing Majesty and Light,

There with thee, new welcom Saint,

Like fortunes may her soul acquaint,

With thee there clad in radiant sheen,

No Marchioness, but now a Queen.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
