The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 10th July 1736 Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh was born illegitimately to [her father] Edward Walpole (age 30) and [her mother] Dorothy Clement (age 21).

Around 1739 [her mother] Dorothy Clement (age 24) died.

Around 1747. Unknown Painter. Portrait of the children of [her father] Edward Walpole (age 41): [her illegitimate sister] Laura, Maria (age 10), [her illegitimate brother] edward (age 10) and [her illegitimate sister] Charlotte (age 9).

Edward Walpole: In 1706 he was born to Robert Walpole 1st Earl Orford and Catherine Shorter. On 12th January 1784 Edward Walpole died. On 2nd March 1797 Horace Walpole 4th Earl Orford died unmarried. Earl Orford extinct. He left a life interest in his home Strawberry Hill House to his first-cousin once-removed Anne Seymour-Conway. After her death in 1828 the house was inherited by his great great nephew John James Waldegrave 6th Earl Waldegrave, great grandson of his brother Edward Walpole.

Laura Walpole: she was born illegitimately to Edward Walpole and Dorothy Clement. On 13th September 1758 Bishop Frederick Keppel and she were married. He the son of William Anne Keppel 2nd Earl Albermarle and Anne Lennox Countess Albermarle. On 27th July 1813 Laura Walpole died.

Edward Walpole: In 1737 he was born illegitimately to Edward Walpole and Dorothy Clement. In 1771 Edward Walpole died without issue.

On 15th May 1759 James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave (age 44) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 22) were married. She by marriage Countess Waldegrave. The difference in their ages was 21 years. He the son of James Waldegrave 1st Earl Waldegrave and Mary Webb.

On 25th March 1760 [her daughter] Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave Countess Waldegrave was born to James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave (age 45) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 23). She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 5th May 1782 her first cousin George Waldegrave 4th Earl Waldegrave, son of John Waldegrave 3rd Earl Waldegrave and Elizabeth Leveson-Gower Countess Waldegrave, and had issue.

On 2nd October 1760 [her brother-in-law] Lionel Tollemache 5th Earl Dysart (age 26) and [her illegitimate sister] Charlotte Walpole Countess Dysart (age 22) were married. He the son of Lionel Tollemache 4th Earl Dysart (age 52) and Grace Carteret Countess Dysart.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." She married 16th November 1784 her fourth cousin once removed George Henry Fitzroy 4th Duke Grafton, son of Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton, and had issue.

In 1762 [her daughter] Anne Horatia Waldegrave was born to James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave (age 46) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 25). She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 1785 her second cousin once removed Hugh Seymour-Conway, son of Francis Seymour-Conway 1st Marquess Hertford and Isabella Fitzroy Countess Hertford, and had issue.

In 1766 William Henry Hanover 1st Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 22) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 29) were married in secret at Pall Mall [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. He the son of Frederick Louis Hanover Prince of Wales and Augusta Saxe Coburg Altenburg (age 46).

On 10th March 1770 Lionel Tollemache 4th Earl Dysart (age 61) died. His son [her brother-in-law] Lionel (age 35) succeeded 5th Earl Dysart, 6th Baronet Talmash of Helmingham in Suffolk. [her illegitimate sister] Charlotte Walpole Countess Dysart (age 32) by marriage Countess Dysart.

On 29th May 1773 [her daughter] Princess Sophia of Gloucester was born to William Henry Hanover 1st Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 29) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 36) at Grosvenor Street. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 24th June 1774 [her daughter] Caroline Hanover was born to William Henry Hanover 1st Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 30) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 37) at Gloucester House. She a great granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland. She died aged less than one years old.

On 14th March 1775 [her daughter] Caroline Hanover died after having been inoculated against smallpox. She was buried at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle [Map].

On 15th January 1776 [her son] William Frederick Hanover 2nd Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh was born to William Henry Hanover 1st Duke Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 32) and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 39) at Palazzo Teodoli, via del Corso. He a great grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland. He married 22nd July 1816 his first cousin Mary Hanover Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh, daughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England.

In 1780 Joshua Reynolds (age 56). Known as The Ladies Waldegrave. From left to right three sisters: [her daughter] Charlotte Maria Waldegrave (age 18), [her daughter] Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave Countess Waldegrave (age 19) and [her daughter] Anne Horatia Waldegrave (age 18). Believed to have been commissioned by their mother (age 43) in the hope of attracting suitors since at the time of the painting all three were unmarried. All three did subsequently marry.

Charlotte Maria Waldegrave: On 11th October 1761 she was born to James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 16th November 1784 George Henry Fitzroy 4th Duke Grafton and she were married at Navestock, Essex. She the daughter of James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. He the son of Augustus Henry Fitzroy 3rd Duke Grafton and Anne Liddell Duchess Grafton. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 1st February 1808 Charlotte Maria Waldegrave died.

Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave Countess Waldegrave: On 25th March 1760 she was born to James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 5th May 1782 George Waldegrave 4th Earl Waldegrave and she were married. She the daughter of James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. He the son of John Waldegrave 3rd Earl Waldegrave and Elizabeth Leveson-Gower Countess Waldegrave. They were first cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. On 22nd October 1784 John Waldegrave 3rd Earl Waldegrave died. His son George succeeded 4th Earl Waldegrave, 5th Baron Waldegrave Chewton Somerset, 8th Baronet Waldegrave of Hever Castle. She by marriage Countess Waldegrave. On 29th January 1816 Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave Countess Waldegrave died.

Anne Horatia Waldegrave: In 1762 she was born to James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. Before 8th July 1779 Robert Bertie 4th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven and Anne Horatia Waldegrave were (possibly) engaged. In 1785 Hugh Seymour-Conway and she were married. She the daughter of James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh. He the son of Francis Seymour-Conway 1st Marquess Hertford and Isabella Fitzroy Countess Hertford. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. In 1801 Anne Horatia Waldegrave died.

On 5th May 1782 [her son-in-law] George Waldegrave 4th Earl Waldegrave (age 30) and [her daughter] Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave Countess Waldegrave (age 22) were married. She the daughter of James Waldegrave 2nd Earl Waldegrave and Maria Walpole Duchess Gloucester and Edinburgh (age 45). He the son of John Waldegrave 3rd Earl Waldegrave (age 64) and Elizabeth Leveson-Gower Countess Waldegrave (age 58). They were first cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 12th January 1784 [her father] Edward Walpole (age 78) died.

On 16th November 1784 [her son-in-law] George Henry Fitzroy 4th Duke Grafton (age 24) and [her daughter] Charlotte Maria Waldegrave (age 23) were married at Navestock, Essex.
