The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Patent Rolls. 20th August 1462. Westminster Palace [Map]. Grant for life to Thomas Witham (age 42), from Michaelmas last, for his good service to the king and his father Richard, late duke of York, of £20 yearly from the fee farm of the town of Scardeburgh [Map] and the manor of Walgrave and from 60 acres of land and the issues of the town.

Scarborough Castle Rebellion

On 25th April 1557 Thomas Stafford (age 24) landed at Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map].

Battle of Lowestoft

On 25th June 1665 Admiral John Lawson (age 50) died in Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map] from wounds received at the Battle of Lowestoft. He was buried at St Dunstan's in the East Parish.

On 3rd December 1830 Frederick Leighton was born to Dr Frederic Septimus Leighton (age 31) at Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map].

On 7th September 1887 Edith Sitwell was born to George Reresby Sitwell 4th Baronet (age 27) and Ida Emily Augusta Denison Lady Sitwell (age 19) in Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map].

On 15th November 1897 Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell 6th Baronet was born to George Reresby Sitwell 4th Baronet (age 37) and Ida Emily Augusta Denison Lady Sitwell (age 29) in Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map]. He married 12th October 1925 Georgia Doble and had issue.

On 3rd September 1902 Alfred Jerome Vassalli (age 21) and Annie Pembroke Reynolds (age 23) were married at Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map].

Raid on Scarborough Hartlepool and Whitby

On 16th December 1914 the German Navy bombarded Scarborough, North Yorkshire [Map], Hartlepool and Whitby. Around 137 were killed, around 600 injured.

On or before 23rd March 1817 Matthew Noble was born to Robert Noble at Hackness. He was baptised on 23rd March 1817 at Hackness. He married 29th December 1855 Frances Mary Claxton.

Londesborough Lodge Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, British Isles

On 1st December 1871 George Philip Cecil Arthur Stanhope 7th Earl Chesterfield (age 40) died of typhoid unmarried. His third cousin George (age 49) succeeded 8th Earl Chesterfield, 8th Baron Stanhope of Shelford in Nottinghamshire. He had been staying at Londesborough Lodge Scarborough with the Prince of Wales (age 30) who also contracted typhoid but survived.
