Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 22nd November 1626 Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey [aged 43] was created 1st Earl Lindsey. Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey by marriage Countess Lindsey.

Battle of Edge Hill

On 23rd October 1642 the Battle of Edge Hill was fought at Edge Hill [Map]. The Royal army was commanded by King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland [aged 41] (with his son King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 12] present), Prince Rupert Palatinate Simmern 1st Duke Cumberland [aged 22] and Richard Spencer [aged 49] commanded the army that included Maurice Palatinate Simmern [aged 21], Richard Byron 2nd Baron Byron [aged 36], Lucius Carey 2nd Viscount Falkland [aged 32], Charles Cavendish [aged 22], Henry Newton aka Puckering 3rd Baronet [aged 24], Spencer Compton 2nd Earl of Northampton [aged 41], Thomas Salusbury 2nd Baronet [aged 30], John Byron 1st Baron Byron [aged 43] and William Feilding 1st Earl Denbigh [aged 55].

George Stewart 9th Seigneur D'Aubigny [aged 24] was killed.

Of the Parliamentary army Basil Feilding 2nd Earl Denbigh [aged 34] and Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex [aged 51]. Oliver St John 5th Baron St John [aged 39] was wounded.

Samuel Sandes [aged 27] commanded a troop of horse.

Richard Sandes [aged 26] was killed.

Thomas Strickland [aged 20] was knighted on the field for his gallantry.

Henry Hunloke 1st Baronet [aged 24] was knighted by King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland.

William Dugdale [aged 37] witnessed the battle and subsequently surveyed the battlefield.

John Hinton [aged 38] was present.

Edward Verney [aged 52] was killed.

John Assheton [aged 29] was killed.

Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey [aged 59] was killed. His son Montagu [aged 34] succeeded 2nd Earl Lindsey, 15th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.

William Pennyman 1st Baronet [aged 35] commanded a regiment, of which he served as Colonel, which he led for the King.

Edward Stradling 2nd Baronet [aged 42] fought for the King, was captured imprisoned for seven months, and died a month after his release.

Around 1648 Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey [aged 40] and Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey [aged 20] were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Edward Wray and Elizabeth Norreys 3rd Baroness Norreys Rycote. He the son of Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey and Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey. They were second cousins.

On 25th July 1666 Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey [aged 58] died at Campden House, Middlesex. His son Robert [aged 35] succeeded 3rd Earl Lindsey, 16th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey [aged 33] by marriage Countess Lindsey.

Around 1700 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey [aged 69] and Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Thomas Pope 2nd Earl Downe and Lucy Dutton Countess Downe. He the son of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.

On 9th May 1701 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey [aged 70] died. His son Robert [aged 40] succeeded 4th Earl Lindsey, 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven by marriage Countess Lindsey.

On 1st January 1741 Peregrine Bertie 2nd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven [aged 54] died. His son Peregrine [aged 27] succeeded 3rd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 3rd Marquess Lindsay, 6th Earl Lindsey, 19th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.

On 12th August 1778 Peregrine Bertie 3rd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven [aged 64] died. His son Robert [aged 21] succeeded 4th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 4th Marquess Lindsay, 7th Earl Lindsey, 20th Baron Willoughby de Eresby.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 8th July 1779 Robert Bertie 4th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven [aged 22] died of scarlet fever unmarried at Grimsthorpe, South Kesteven. His uncle Brownlow [aged 50] succeeded 5th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, 5th Marquess Lindsay, 8th Earl Lindsey. His sister Priscilla [aged 18] succeeded 21st Baroness Willoughby de Eresby.

In 1809 Albermarle Bertie 9th Earl Lindsey [aged 64] and Charlotte Layard Countess Lindsey [aged 28] were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. The difference in their ages was 35 years.

On 8th February 1809 Brownlow Bertie 5th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven [aged 79] died without male issue at Grimsthorpe, South Kesteven. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Swinstead [Map] on 17th February 1809. Duke Ancaster and Kesteven, Marquess Lindsay extinct. His third cousin Albermarle [aged 64] succeeded 9th Earl Lindsey.

Sculpted by Richard Westmacott [aged 33]. A handsome white marble wall tablet in Grecian style depicting deceased and wife on a catafalque with mourning female figure, flanked by mother, children and angel. Above a scrolled cornice with Ducal coronet and palm. Beneath a rectangular inscription panel, flanked by scrolled brackets.

On 17th September 1818 Albermarle Bertie 9th Earl Lindsey [aged 74] died. His son George [aged 3] succeeded 10th Earl Lindsey.

On 21st March 1877 George Bertie 10th Earl Lindsey [aged 62] died without issue. His brother Montague [aged 61] succeeded 11th Earl Lindsey. Felicia Elizabetha Welby Countess Lindsey [aged 42] by marriage Countess Lindsey.

On 27th January 1899 Montague Peregrine Bertie 11th Earl Lindsey [aged 83] died. His son Montague [aged 37] succeeded 12th Earl Lindsey. Millicent Cox Countess Lindsey [aged 36] by marriage Countess Lindsey.

On 2nd January 1938 Montague Peregrine Albemarle Bertie 12th Earl Lindsey [aged 76] died. His half fifth cousin three times removed Montagu [aged 50] succeeded 13th Earl Lindsey.

On 11th September 1963 Montagu Henry Edmund Cecil Towneley Bertie 8th Earl of Abingdon 13th Earl Lindsey [aged 75] died. His first cousin Richard [aged 32] succeeded 14th Earl Lindsey, 9th Earl Abingdon, 13th Baron Norreys of Rycote.
