Biography of John III King Portugal 1502-1557

In 1497 [his father] Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal (age 27) and [his aunt] Isabella Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal (age 27) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. Her first husband being his nephew Afonso Aviz.He would, three years later, marry her younger sister [his mother] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal (age 15); an example of Married to Two Siblings. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Ferdinand II King Aragon (age 44) and [his grandmother] Isabella Queen Castile (age 45). They were first cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

In 1500 [his father] Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal (age 30) and [his mother] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal (age 18) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. On 7th June 1502 John III King Portugal was born to Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal (age 33) and Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal (age 20). Coefficient of inbreeding 8.38%.

In 1517 [his mother] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal (age 35) died.

On 16th July 1518 [his father] Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal (age 49) and [his step-mother] Eleanor of Austria Queen Consort France Queen Consort Portugal (age 19) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. The difference in their ages was 29 years. She the daughter of Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile and [his aunt] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile (age 39). They were first cousin twice removed. On 13th December 1521 [his father] Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal (age 52) died. His son John (age 19) succeeded III King Portugal.

On 10th February 1525 John III King Portugal (age 22) and Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 18) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. She the daughter of Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile and Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile (age 46). He the son of Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal and Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. They were first cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 20th January 1526 [his sister-in-law] Isabella of Austria Queen Consort Denmark and Norway (age 24) died at Ghent [Map].

On 24th February 1526 [his son] Afonso Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 23) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 19). Their first child, he died on 12th April 1526. Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 10th March 1526 [his brother-in-law] Charles V Holy Roman Emperor (age 26) and [his sister] Isabel Aviz Queen Consort Spain (age 22) were married. She the daughter of [his father] Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal and [his mother] Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. He the son of Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile and [his aunt] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile (age 47). They were first cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Before 9th July 1526 [his brother-in-law] Ferdinand I Holy Roman Emperor (age 23) and Anne Jagiellon (age 22) were married at Linz. She the daughter of Vladislaus II King Hungary and Anna Foix Queen Consort of Hungary and Bohemia. He the son of Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile and [his aunt] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile (age 47). They were half second cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 15th October 1527 [his daughter] Maria Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 25) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 20). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 28th April 1529 [his daughter] Isabel Aviz died.

On 28th April 1529 [his daughter] Isabel Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 26) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 22). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 15th February 1530 [his daughter] Beatrice Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 27) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 23). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 15th February 1530 [his daughter] Beatrice Aviz died.

On 1st November 1531 [his son] Manuel Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 29) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 24). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 25th March 1533 [his son] Philip Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 30) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 26). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 6th April 1535 [his son] Infante Denis Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 32) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 28). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 1st January 1537 [his son] Infante Denis Aviz (age 1) died.

On 14th April 1537 [his son] Manuel Aviz (age 5) died.

On 3rd June 1537 [his son] John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal was born to John III King Portugal (age 34) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 30). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 9th March 1539 [his son] Infante Anthony Aviz was born to John III King Portugal (age 36) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 32). Coefficient of inbreeding 11.30%.

On 29th April 1539 [his son] Philip Aviz (age 6) died.

On 20th January 1540 [his son] Infante Anthony Aviz died.

On 12th November 1543 [his son-in-law] Philip "The Prudent" II King Spain (age 16) and [his daughter] Maria Aviz (age 16) were married at Salamanca [Map]. She the daughter of John III King Portugal (age 41) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 36). He the son of [his brother-in-law] Charles V Holy Roman Emperor (age 43) and [his sister] Isabel Aviz Queen Consort Spain. They were double first cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 12th August 1545 [his daughter] Maria Aviz (age 17) died from childbirth one month after giving birth to her son [his grandson] Carlos Habsburg Spain.

In 1548 Philip Hoby (age 43) was appointed Ambassador to the court of [his brother-in-law] Charles V Holy Roman Emperor (age 47).

In 1552 [his son] John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal (age 14) and [his daughter-in-law] Joanna of Austria Princess Portugal (age 16) were married. She the daughter of [his brother-in-law] Charles V Holy Roman Emperor (age 51) and [his sister] Isabel Aviz Queen Consort Spain. He the son of John III King Portugal (age 49) and [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 44). They were double first cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 2nd January 1554 [his son] John Manuel Aviz Prince Portugal (age 16) died.

On 11th June 1557 John III King Portugal (age 55) died. His grandson [his grandson] Sebastian (age 3) succeeded King Portugal. Sebastian's paternal grandmother [his wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 50) acted as Regent during his minority being replaced by [his brother] Henrique Aviz Cardinal King Portugal (age 45) when she resigned in 1562.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 16th August 1557. The xvj day of August be-gane to sett up the herse for the kyng of Denmarke [Note. A mistake for the King of Portugal], a frame of iiij-sqware.

Note. Ibid. Hearse for the king of [Portugal]. Machyn here made the error of naming the king of Denmark, instead of the king of Portugal, John III. who succeeded his father Emanuel in 1521, and died 1557. He had married Jane aunt of king Philip, and hence arose the special observance of his obsequies in this country. They are briefly noticed by Holinshed, p. 1768; but are recorded at full in the College of Arms, I. 15, f. 246. At the beginning of this paragraph for xviiij read xviij.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 19th August 1557. The xviiij day of August was the hers for the kyng of Denmarke fenysshed, with wax, the wyche was never sen shyche on [seen such a one] in England of that fassyon, of sqware tapurs, and xxj baners and baners rolles of all ther leneges and mareges in baner-rolles. The sam nyght was the durge, my lord tresorer cheyff morner; and after that my lord Darcy (age 60), ser Robart Uxinbryge (age 49), ser Edmond Peckam (age 62), ser [Robert] Freston (age 57), cofferer to the quen (age 41), and ser Recherd Sowthwell (age 54), ser Arthur Darcy (age 62), and mony nobull men and gentyllmen alle in blake; and my lord of London (age 57) begane the durge, with ys myter [on] alle the durge wylle; and after the durge alle the haroldes and the lordes whent to the bysshope of London('s) plasse and dronke; and iiij goodly whytt branchys, and vj dosen torchys, and the qwer hangyd with blake and armes; and vj pilers covered with velvet, and a goodly hers-cloth of tensell, the crosse of cloth of selver; and the morow masse, and a goodly sermon, and after to my lord('s) of London to dener for the kyng of Denmarke('s) obseque and fenerall, and a mageste and valans fryng of gold, and x dosen pensels, and x dosen skochyns of armes.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 23rd August 1557. The xxiij day of August was the hers of the kyng [of Denmark] at Powlles taken downe by master Garter, and serten of the lord tressorer('s) servandes, and the waxchandlers and carpynters.

On 12th February 1578 [his former wife] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal (age 71) died.
