The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 1st January 1515 Louis XII King France (age 52) died. His first cousin once removed Francis (age 20) succeeded I King France: Capet Valois Angoulême.
On 31st March 1547 King Francis I of France (age 52) died. His son Henry (age 28) succeeded II King France: Capet Valois Angoulême.
On 25th July 1547 King Henry II of France (age 28) was crowned II King France: Capet Valois Angoulême.
On 10th July 1559 King Henry II of France (age 40) was killed whilst jousting in celebration of his daughter's (age 14) marriage to Philip "The Prudent" II King Spain (age 32). His son Francis (age 15) succeeded II King France: Capet Valois Angoulême. Mary Queen of Scots (age 16) by marriage Queen Consort France. They would reign for eighteen months only with Francis dying in Dec 1560. Francis and Mary would have no issue.
On 5th December 1560 Francis II King France King Consort Scotland (age 16) died. His brother Charles (age 10) succeeded IX King France: Capet Valois Angoulême. Mary Queen of Scots (age 17) no longer Queen of France she returned to Scotland arriving at Leith 19th August 1561 after having been in France for thirteen years.
On 30th May 1574 Charles IX King France (age 23) died. His brother Henry (age 22) succeeded III King France: Capet Valois Angoulême.
On 13th February 1575 Henry III King France (age 23) was crowned III King France: Capet Valois Angoulême at Reims Cathedral.
On 12th May 1575 Henry III King France (age 23) Abdicated King France: Capet Valois Angoulême. His second cousin Henry (age 21) succeeded IV King France: Capet Valois Bourbon.

On 14th May 1610 Henry IV King France (age 56) was murdered by François Ravaillac, a Catholic zealot who stabbed him while his coach was stopped on Rue de la Ferronnerie. His son Louis (age 8) succeeded XIII King France: Capet Valois Bourbon.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 16th December 1431 Henry VI (age 10) was crowned II King France: Lancaster at Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral [Map] by Cardinal Henry Beaufort (age 56). A somewhat futile exercise; the last gasps of the Hundred Years War. The ceremony had been arranged by John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford (age 42). His wife Anne Valois Duchess of Bedford (age 27) attended.
Walter Hungerford 1st Baron Hungerford (age 53) was appointed Carver.
Thomas Harrington (age 31), Richard Archer (age 44), Hugh Courtenay 4th or 12th Earl Devon and his son Thomas (age 17) attended.
