David III Strathbogie 11th Earl Atholl 1309-1335

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough. At the end of December, the King of Scotland, with an army assigned to him by the King of England, went through Annandale as far as Glasgow, Carrick, and Cunningham, consuming everything with fire and carrying off plunder. The King of England, for his part, invaded Lothian and the neighbouring areas, capturing certain malefactors and killing their leaders. On their return toward Berwick, Earl Patrick, although the King of England had shown him many courtesies and he had sworn fealty and done homage, withdrew from them and, by his letters, renounced his homage. Toward the end of July [1334], the King of England with his army entered Scotland and inflicted many evils on the inhabitants; the King of Scotland, with his army, did likewise on his side together with the Earl Warenne. Finally, at the town of St. John's [Perth], both kings met, where the Earl of Atholl and Alexander Mowbray, and others who had departed from the aforesaid kings because of the homage Edward Balliol had rendered to the King of England, submitted themselves to the grace of both kings under certain conditions; and thus the Earl of Atholl took over the kingdom beyond the Scottish Sea in place of the King of Scotland, but the Scots, attacking him with hostility, treacherously killed him¹.

Tandem apud villam Sancti Johannis ambo reges convenerunt, ubi comes de Athels et Alexander Mowbrai et alii qui propter homagium Edwardi de Baliolo regi Angliæ factum a prædictis regibus discesserant sub certis conditionibus utriusque regis gratiæ se submiserunt; sicque comes de Athels regnum vice regis Scotia ultra mare Scoticum suscepit, quem Scoti hostiliter aggressi, atrociter per insidias occiderunt.

Note 1. The Earl of Athol was slain at the siege of Kildrummie, which he had attacked in order to take prisoner the wife of the valiant Sir Andrew Moray of Bothwell, and sister of Robert Bruce; but Moray having intelligence of his design, assembled a body of men, and accompanied by William Douglas: and the Earl of March, hastened to raise the siege. They encountered the troops of the Earl of Athol in the forest of Kilblain, whom they entirely defeated, Athol himself being slain in the engagement. Andrew of Wyntoun, Volume 2, Chapter 31.
