Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

In April 1875 Murray Gladstone [aged 59] bought a house in Wilton Place, Belgravia, and by mid-August the sale of Tan-y-foel to the Kneeshaws for £10,000 became public knowledge.

On 23rd August 1875 Murray Gladstone [aged 59] died, found on Penmaenmawr, apparently drowned.

At around 7 p.m. on 23 August, Gladstone Junior informed his father at Tan-y-foel that he and some of his friends were to go fishing from the beach later that evening. He set out from his own home, Gwynfa Villa, about two and a half hours later. The fishing party stayed out in their boat until 10.45pm. Emily Gladstone was shrimping on the beach when her father-in-law passed her roughly at the same time. She was the last person to see him alive. Back at Gwynfa Villa after the excursion, Gladstone jr was visited by his mother and sister Florence shortly after midnight. They wanted to know whether he had seen his father during his outing. In response, Gladstone jr immediately assembled a search party, which also included his sister, and they headed back to the beach. The group was busy searching the railway tracks and beach for about an hour, when Florence discovered her father’s lifeless body floating in the water about 100 yards west of the gasworks around 1.20 a.m. Dr Risk estimated that Gladstone had already been dead for at least half an hour.

On 28th August 1879 Murray Gladstone was buried at St Gwynan’s Church. Among the many mourners were Gladstone’s immediate and extended family, including William Ewart Gladstone [aged 69]. The service was performed by the Bishop of Bangor James Campbell [aged 65] and the vicar of the parish, the Reverend David Jones.

[his son] Murray Gladstone was born to Murray Gladstone. He married 29th September 1874 Emily Annina Wynn, daughter of Spencer Bulkeley Wynn 3rd Baron Newborough and Frances Maria De Winton Baroness Newborough.
