The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

In 1644 John Acland 1st Baronet [aged 53] was created 1st Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon although the Letters Patent were lost and the dignity was not confirmed until 1678 after his death.

On 24th August 1647 John Acland 1st Baronet [aged 56] died. His son Francis succeeded 2nd Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

In 1649 Francis Acland 2nd Baronet died unmarried and without issue. His brother John succeeded 3rd Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

In 1672 Arthur Acland 4th Baronet [aged 17] died. His uncle Hugh [aged 33] succeeded 5th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 9th March 1714 Hugh Acland 5th Baronet [aged 75] died. His grandson Hugh [aged 17] succeeded 6th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 29th July 1729 Hugh Acland 6th Baronet [aged 32] died. His son John [aged 6] succeeded 7th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 7th January 1745 John Dyke Acland 7th Baronet [aged 22] and Elizabeth Dyke Lady Acland were married. She by marriage Lady Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 24th February 1785 John Dyke Acland 7th Baronet [aged 62] died. His grandson John [aged 7] succeeded 8th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

In April 1785 John Dyke Acland 8th Baronet [aged 7] died. His uncle Thomas [aged 32] succeeded 9th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon. He died a few weeks later.

On 17th May 1794 Thomas Dyke Acland 9th Baronet [aged 42] died. His son Thomas [aged 7] succeeded 10th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 22nd July 1871 Thomas Dyke Acland 10th Baronet [aged 84] died. His son Thomas [aged 62] succeeded 11th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 29th May 1898 Thomas Dyke Acland 11th Baronet [aged 89] died. His son Thomas [aged 55] succeeded 12th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon. Gertrude Walrond Lady Acland [aged 45] by marriage Lady Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 18th February 1919 Thomas Dyke Acland 12th Baronet [aged 76] died. His brother Arthur [aged 71] succeeded 13th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon. Alice Sophia Cunningham Lady Acland [aged 70] by marriage Lady Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 9th October 1926 Arthur Dyke Acland 13th Baronet [aged 78] died. His son Francis [aged 52] succeeded 14th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 9th June 1939 Francis Dyke Acland 14th Baronet [aged 65] died. His son Richard [aged 32] succeeded 15th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 24th November 1990 Richard Acland 15th Baronet [aged 83] died. His son John [aged 51] succeeded 16th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 26th September 2009 John Dyke Acland 16th Baronet [aged 70] died the day after he had been involved in a car accident. His son Dominic [aged 47] succeeded 17th Baronet Acland of Columb John in Devon.

On 15th July 1944 Antony Guy Acland 5th Baronet [aged 27] and Margaret Joan Rooke Lady Acland were married. She by marriage Lady Acland of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford.

On 4th December 1970 William Acland 3rd Baronet [aged 82] died. His brother Hubert [aged 80] succeeded 4th Baronet Acland of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford.

On 6th May 1978 Hubert Acland 4th Baronet [aged 87] died. His son Antony [aged 61] succeeded 5th Baronet Acland of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford.

On 14th December 1983 Antony Guy Acland 5th Baronet [aged 67] died. His son Christopher [aged 37] succeeded 6th Baronet Acland of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford.
