The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Samuel Pepys' Diary. 1st January 1668. Thence I to White Hall, and there walked up and down the house a while, and do hear nothing of anything done further in this business of the change of Privy-counsellors: only I hear that Sir G. Savile [aged 34], one of the Parliament Committee of nine, for examining the Accounts, is by the King [aged 37] made a Lord, the Lord Halifax; which, I believe, will displease the Parliament.

On 31st December 1677 George Savile 1st Marquess Halifax [aged 44] was created 1st Viscount Halifax, 1st Baron Savile of Elland. Gertrude Pierrepont Marchioness Halifax by marriage Viscountess Halifax.

On 5th April 1695 George Savile 1st Marquess Halifax [aged 61] died apparently as a consequence of eating undercooked chicken. He was buried in the north aisle of the King Henry VII Chapel, Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son William [aged 30] succeeded 2nd Marquess Halifax, 2nd Earl Halifax, 2nd Viscount Halifax, 2nd Baron Savile of Elland, 5th Baronet Savile of Thornhill. Mary Finch Duchess Roxburghe [aged 18] by marriage Marchioness Halifax.

On 31st August 1700 William Savile 2nd Marquess Halifax [aged 35] died without male issue. Marquess Halifax, Earl Halifax, Viscount Halifax and Baron Savile of Elland extinct. His first cousin twice removed John [aged 50] succeeded 6th Baronet Savile of Thornhill

In 1866 Charles Wood 1st Viscount Halifax [aged 65] was created 1st Viscount Halifax. Mary Grey Viscountess Halifax [aged 58] by marriage Viscountess Halifax.

On 8th August 1885 Charles Wood 1st Viscount Halifax [aged 84] died. His son Charles [aged 46] succeeded 2nd Viscount Halifax, 4th Baronet Wood of Barnsley in Yorkshire. Agnes Elizabeth Courtenay Viscountess Halifax [aged 47] by marriage Viscountess Halifax.

On 19th January 1934 Charles Lindley Wood 2nd Viscount Halifax [aged 95] died. His son Edward [aged 52] succeeded 3rd Viscount Halifax, 5th Baronet Wood of Barnsley in Yorkshire. Dorothy Evelyn Augusta Onslow Countess Halifax [aged 49] by marriage Viscountess Halifax.

On 23rd December 1959 Edward Frederick Lindley Wood 1st Earl Halifax [aged 78] died. His son Charles [aged 47] succeeded 2nd Earl Halifax, 6th Baronet Wood of Barnsley in Yorkshire. Ruth Alice Hannah Mary Primrose Countess Halifax [aged 43] by marriage Viscountess Halifax.

On 19th March 1980 Charles Ingram Courtenay Wood 2nd Earl Halifax [aged 67] died. His son Charles [aged 36] succeeded 3rd Earl Halifax, 4th Viscount Halifax, 7th Baronet Wood of Barnsley in Yorkshire.
