Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Around 1527 Nicholas Mosley was born to Edward Mosley [aged 27].

On 25th February 1533 Nicholas Mosley [aged 6] and Margaret Whitbroke [aged 3] were married at All Hallows Church, Honey Lane [Map].

In 1558 [his son] Rowland Mosley was born to Nicholas Mosley [aged 31] and [his wife] Margaret Whitbroke [aged 28].

In 1558 Hugh Hindley and [his future wife] Elizabeth Rookes [aged 18] were married at All Hallows Church, Bread Street.

Before 1568 [his father] Edward Mosley [aged 67] died.

On or before 17th October 1569, the date he was baptised at St James' Church, Didsbury [Map], Edward Mosley was born to Nicholas Mosley [aged 42] and [his wife] Margaret Whitbroke [aged 39]

In 1589 [his wife] Margaret Whitbroke [aged 59] died.

On 19th October 1592 Nicholas Mosley [aged 65] and Elizabeth Rookes [aged 52] were married at All Hallows Church, Bread Street.

In 1596 Hough End Hall, Chorlton-cum-Hardy [Map] was commissioned by Nicholas Mosley [aged 69].

In 1599 Nicholas Mosley [aged 72] was appointed Lord Mayor of London.

On 12th December 1612 Nicholas Mosley [aged 85] died. His son Edward Mosley [aged 43] inherited parcels of his father's property and £1,450 in cash.

Rowland Mosley: In 1558 he was born to Nicholas Mosley and Margaret Whitbroke. 24th December 1594. Grant of property in Stockport, Offerton and Bredbury in Cheshire by Alexander Lowe of Stockport, esq to Rowland Mosley and Richard Elcocke of London, clothworkers. In 1616 he died.

22nd November 1613. Will of Nicholas Mosley my will and mynde is that Dame [his former wife] Elizabeth [aged 73] nowe my wief shall have soe muche, if shee be contented therewith....three hundred poundes ev'rie yeare duringe her n'rall lief....and 30 pounds a yeare more for house rente....two of my best beddes.....plate as shee had att the tyme of my mayroltie in London....her chaine and brasletts and her wearinge apparell and all thinges hereunto belonging....my coache and horses....her lynnens.....butt if my said wief bee not therewith contented butt shall in anie wise sue and trouble my executor for anie further or other portions, that then my will and mynde is that my former guiftes and bequeathes shall cease and bee utterlie voyde.

In May 1617 [his former wife] Elizabeth Rookes [aged 77] died. She was buried at St James' Church, Didsbury [Map].
