Commissioned by the sitter for 250 guineas as a present for his mother [aged 42] and was begun in 1807, probably to commemorate a trip to the Hebrides which Byron was then planning. Byron was still discussing this portrait and its frame after his departure from England in July 1809.

On 19th July 1799 John Frederick Sackville 3rd Duke Dorset died. His succeeded son George Frederick Sackville 4th Duke Dorset succeeded 4th Duke Dorset, 10th Earl Dorset, 5th Earl Middlesex, 10th Baron Buckhurst, 5th Baron Cranfield of Cranfield in Middlesex. On 14th February 1815 George Frederick Sackville 4th Duke Dorset died. His succeeded first cousin once removed Charles Sackville 5th Duke Dorset succeeded 5th Duke Dorset, 11th Earl Dorset, 6th Earl Middlesex, 11th Baron Buckhurst, 6th Baron Cranfield of Cranfield in Middlesex.
