There have been two creations of Baron Carteret:

1st. 1681. George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret. Extinct. 1776.

2nd. 1784. Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret. Extinct. 10th March 1849.

Baron Carteret of Hawnes 1st Creation 1681

Summary

22nd September 1695. Son John Carteret 2nd Earl Granville [aged 5] succeeded.

2nd January 1763. Son Robert Carteret 3rd Earl Granville [aged 42] succeeded.

1776. Robert Carteret 3rd Earl Granville extinct.

In 1681 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 13] was created 1st Baron Carteret of Hawnes.

Before 22nd April 1690 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 22] and Jane Granville Baroness Gower [aged 35] were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret of Hawnes. She the daughter of John Granville 1st Earl Bath [aged 61] and Jane Wyche.

On 22nd September 1695 George Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 28] died. His son John [aged 5] succeeded 2nd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, 3rd Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey.

On 2nd January 1763 John Carteret 2nd Earl Granville [aged 72] died at Arlington Street. His son Robert [aged 42] succeeded 3rd Earl Granville, 3rd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, 4th Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey.

In 1776 Robert Carteret 3rd Earl Granville [aged 55] died. Earl Granville, Baron Carteret of Hawnes, Baronet Carteret of Metesches in Jersey extinct.

On 9th May 1797 George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret [aged 27] and Harriet Courtenay Baroness Carteret [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret of Hawnes. She the daughter of William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 61].

In 1784 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 49] was created 1st Baron Carteret with a special remainder to the younger sons of his brother, the Marquess of Bath.

The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

In 1810 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 75] and Eleanor Smart Baroness Carteret were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret.

In 1826 Henry Carteret 1st Baron Carteret [aged 91] died. His nephew George [aged 55] succeeded 2nd Baron Carteret.

On 19th February 1838 George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret [aged 68] died. His brother John [aged 65] succeeded 3rd Baron Carteret.

On 10th March 1849 John Thynne 3rd Baron Carteret [aged 76] died at his home Hawnes Park, Bedfordshire. Baron Carteret extinct. His estates including Hawnes Park, Bedfordshire were inherited by his nephew John Thynne [aged 50].
