Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Bishop John Sandale -1319

Between 1298 and 1305 John Sandale served as Warden of the Mint.

In 1307 John Sandale was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was dismissed the following year.

On 6th July 1310 John Sandale was appointed Lord High Treasurer which office he held until 1311. Between 1312 and 1314 he was acting Lord Treasurer.

Annales Paulini. In the same year, during Easter week [19th April], Sir John de Langton, Bishop of Chichester, was honourably removed by the king from the office of Chancellor, and the seal was entrusted to the custody of Sir Adam de Osgodby, R. de Barneby and Master J. Franceys from that time until the Monday next after the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul [6th July 1310]. On that same day Sir Walter Reynolds, Bishop of Worcester, having been released from the office of Treasurer, was made the king's Chancellor, although the commonalty of England did not consent. At the same time Sir John de Sandale was made the king's Treasurer.

Eodem anno, in septimana Pasche, dominus Johannes de Langethone, Cicestrensis episcopus, depositus fuit per regem de officio cancellariæ ad honorem suum; et fuit sigillum traditum in custodiam dominorum Adæ de Osegodesbi, et R. de Barneby et magistri J. Franceys; ab eo tempore usque ad diem Lunæ proximam post festum apostolorum Petri et Pauli; et eodem die dominus Walterus Reginaldi, episcopus Wygorniensis, absolutus addon ab officio thesaurarii, factus fuit cancellarius regis, communitate tamen Angliæ non consentiente; et eodem tempore dominus Johannes de Sandale factus fuit thesaurarius regis.

On 26th September 1314 John Sandale was appointed Lord Chancellor.

Life of Edward II of Caernarfon by a Monk of Bridlington. Likewise, in the same year, the see of Ely fell vacant, and John Hotham was appointed to it. The see of Winchester likewise fell vacant, and John Sandale was admitted to it at the King's insistence.

Item eodem anno episcopatus Eliensis vacavit, cui præfectus! Johannes de Hothome, et Wyntoniensis similiter, cui Johannes de Sandale ad regis instantiam est admissus.

On 26th July 1316 John Sandale was elected Bishop of Winchester.

On 31st October 1316 John Sandale was consecrated Bishop of Winchester.

In November 1318 John Sandale was appointed Lord High Treasurer which office he held until his death.

On 2nd November 1319 Bishop John Sandale died.

Annals Londonienses. "In the year of our Lord 1316, and still in the ninth year of the king's reign, Sir John [Ketton], monk and Bishop of Ely, died [on 14th May], and John Hotham succeeded him. In the same year, on 3 June, Louis, King of France, died. In the same year, Henry Woodlock, monk and Bishop of Winchester, died on the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul [29th June]. He was succeeded by John Sandale, Chancellor of the lord king. In the same year, on the feast of St Donatus, Pope John was elected at Lyons, being the twenty-second pope of that name. In this same year the aforesaid terrible famine and mortality continued, together with very great intemperance of weather, and there was a great scarcity of salt, so that eight bushels were sold for forty shillings. In the same year, on the vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [13th August], John, the king's second son, was born at Waltham."
