On 15th August 1782 [his father] James Maitland 8th Earl Lauderdale [aged 23] and [his mother] Eleanor Todd Countess Lauderdale [aged 20] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] John Maitland 7th Earl Lauderdale [aged 64] and [his grandmother] Mary Turner Lombe Countess Launderdale.
On 12th May 1784 James Maitland 9th Earl Lauderdale was born to James Maitland 8th Earl Lauderdale [aged 25] and Eleanor Todd Countess Lauderdale [aged 22].
On 17th August 1789 [his grandfather] John Maitland 7th Earl Lauderdale [aged 71] died at Haltoun House, Ratho. His son [his father] James [aged 30] succeeded 8th Earl Lauderdale, 8th Viscount Maitland, 8th Viscount Lauderdale, 4th Baronet Maitland of Ravelrig in Nova Scotia. [his mother] Eleanor Todd Countess Lauderdale [aged 27] by marriage Countess Lauderdale.
In 1806 James Maitland 9th Earl Lauderdale [aged 21] was elected MP Camelford which seat he held until 1807.
In 1811 James Maitland 9th Earl Lauderdale [aged 26] was elected MP Richmond which seat he held until 1820.
In 1828 James Maitland 9th Earl Lauderdale [aged 43] was elected MP Appleby which seat he held until 1832.
On 10th September 1839 [his father] James Maitland 8th Earl Lauderdale [aged 80] died at Thirlestane Castle, Lauder. His son James [aged 55] succeeded 9th Earl Lauderdale, 9th Viscount Maitland, 9th Viscount Lauderdale, 2nd Baron Lauderdale of Thirlestane in Berwickshire, 5th Baronet Maitland of Ravelrig in Nova Scotia.
In 1856 [his mother] Eleanor Todd Countess Lauderdale [aged 94] died.
On 22nd August 1860 James Maitland 9th Earl Lauderdale [aged 76] died unmarried at Thirlestane Castle. His brother Anthony [aged 75] succeeded 10th Earl Lauderdale, 10th Viscount Maitland, 10th Viscount Lauderdale, 3rd Baron Lauderdale of Thirlestane in Berwickshire, 6th Baronet Maitland of Ravelrig in Nova Scotia.
