On 2nd May 1799 [his father] Philip Stanhope 5th Earl Chesterfield [aged 43] and [his mother] Henrietta Thynne [aged 36] were married at Grosvenor Street. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 63].

On 23rd May 1805 George Stanhope 6th Earl Chesterfield was born to Philip Stanhope 5th Earl Chesterfield [aged 49] and Henrietta Thynne [aged 42].

On 31st May 1813 [his mother] Henrietta Thynne [aged 50] died.

On 29th August 1815 [his father] Philip Stanhope 5th Earl Chesterfield [aged 59] died at Chesterfield House. His son George [aged 10] succeeded 6th Earl Chesterfield, 6th Baron Stanhope of Shelford in Nottinghamshire.

In 1830 George Stanhope 6th Earl Chesterfield [aged 24] and Anne Weld-Forester Countess Chesterfield [aged 27] were married. She by marriage Countess Chesterfield. He the son of Philip Stanhope 5th Earl Chesterfield and Henrietta Thynne. They were fourth cousins.

On 28th September 1831 [his son] George Philip Cecil Arthur Stanhope 7th Earl Chesterfield was born to George Stanhope 6th Earl Chesterfield [aged 26] and [his wife] Anne Weld-Forester Countess Chesterfield [aged 29].

Adeline Horsey Recollections. On my second visit to Bretby [Map] I remember we acted De Musset's play, Le Caprice. [his wife] Lady Chesterfield's [aged 41] daughter, Evelyn Stanhope [aged 9], afterwards Countess of Carnarvon, and Miss Anson [aged 12], afterwards Countess Howe, took the girls' parts, and I was the hero. Lady Dufferin [aged 37] coached me and, what was very important, taught me to sit down like a man! My costume was an olla podrida of other people's garments, for I wore Lady Chesterfield's riding-trousers, Lord Cleveden's coat and waistcoat, one of Lord Chesterfield's [aged 38] shirts, and a curly wig put the finishing-touch to the character. Le Caprice was a great success, and we were highly pleased with ourselves.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. In the autumn of 1844 we went to Bretby [Map], the seat of the Earl of Chesterfield [aged 38], where we spent a most enjoyable time. There was a large house-party, among many others the Duke [aged 44] and Duchess [aged 26] of Montrose, Mr. [aged 37] and Lady Sophia des Voeux, Lord Alvanley [aged 54], and the Count de Nieukerke, who was the recognised lover of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte [aged 23]. M. de Nieukerke was a very charming man, and he was much struck by my singing, and used to compare me with George Sand's heroine - Consuelo - for I was a very pretty girl with a slight, but fine figure, and long hair that fell in curls below my knees.

On 20th April 1844 Orlando Bridgeman 3rd Earl Bradford [aged 24] and [his sister-in-law] Selina Weld-Forester Countess Bradford were married. He the son of George Bridgeman 2nd Earl Bradford [aged 54] and Georgina Elizabeth Moncrieffe Countess Bradford. They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1861 [his son-in-law] Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert 4th Earl Carnarvon [aged 29] and Evelyn Stanhope Countess Carnarvon [aged 26] were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. She by marriage Countess Carnarvon. She the daughter of George Stanhope 6th Earl Chesterfield [aged 55] and Anne Weld-Forester Countess Chesterfield [aged 58]. He the son of Henry John George Herbert 3rd Earl Carnarvon and Henrietta Anna Howard-Molyneux-Howard Countess Carnarvon [aged 56]. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes

Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. Written from the perspective of a burgher (bourgeois) rather than a monastery or royal court, the chronicle offers a rare lay viewpoint on high politics and warfare, reflecting how merchants, townspeople, and civic institutions experienced the turbulence of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its narrative style combines straightforward reporting of events with moral and civic observations, making it a valuable source for readers interested in medieval urban society, regional politics, and the lived experience of war and governance in pre-modern Europe.
