William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 17th October 1680 Charles "Don Carlo" Fitzcharles 1st Earl Plymouth [aged 23] died of dysentery at Tangier [Map] during the Siege of Tangier. Earl Plymouth, Viscount Totnes and Baron Dartmouth extinct.

In 1682 George Legge 1st Baron Dartmouth [aged 35] was created 1st Baron Dartmouth. Barbara Archbold Baroness Dartmouth [aged 32] by marriage Baroness Dartmouth.

On 25th October 1691 George Legge 1st Baron Dartmouth [aged 44] died at Tower of London [Map]. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Minories [Map]. His son William Legge [aged 19] succeeded 2nd Baron Dartmouth.

On 15th December 1750 William Legge 1st Earl Dartmouth [aged 78] died. His grandson William [aged 19] succeeded 2nd Earl Dartmouth, 3rd Baron Dartmouth.

In 15th June 1801 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth [aged 45] by writ of acceleration 4th Baron Dartmouth. His father died a month later when he succeeded to his other titles.

On 10th November 1810 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth [aged 55] died in Cornwall. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Minories [Map] on 24th November 1810. His son William [aged 25] succeeded 4th Earl Dartmouth, 5th Baron Dartmouth.

On 22nd November 1853 William Legge 4th Earl Dartmouth [aged 68] died. In 1853 His son William [aged 30] succeeded 5th Earl Dartmouth, 6th Baron Dartmouth. Augusta Finch Countess Dartmouth [aged 31] by marriage Countess Dartmouth.

On 4th August 1891 William Legge 5th Earl Dartmouth [aged 67] died. His son William [aged 40] succeeded 6th Earl Dartmouth, 7th Baron Dartmouth.

On 11th March 1936 William Legge 6th Earl Dartmouth [aged 84] died. His son William [aged 55] succeeded 7th Earl Dartmouth, 8th Baron Dartmouth. Ruperta Wynn-Carington Countess Dartmouth [aged 53] by marriage Countess Dartmouth.

In 1958 William Legge 7th Earl Dartmouth [aged 77] died. In 1958 His brother Humphry [aged 70] succeeded 8th Earl Dartmouth, 9th Baron Dartmouth. Raine McCorquodale Countess Dartmouth and Spencer [aged 28] by marriage Countess Dartmouth.

In 1962 Humphry Legge 8th Earl Dartmouth [aged 74] died. His son Gerald [aged 37] succeeded 9th Earl Dartmouth, 10th Baron Dartmouth.

On 14th December 1997 Gerald Legge 9th Earl of Dartmouth [aged 73] died. His son William [aged 48] succeeded 10th Earl Dartmouth, 11th Baron Dartmouth.
