John Freke 1591-1641

Around 1591 John Freke was born to Thomas Freke [aged 27] and Elizabeth Taylor.

Around 1611 John Freke [aged 20] and Arundell Trenchard were married. They had a son, who predeceased him and a daughter.

In 1614 John Freke [aged 23] was elected MP Wareham.

In 1621 John Freke [aged 30] was elected MP Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. He was re-elected in 1624.

In 1625 John Freke [aged 34] purchased Cerne Abbas, Dorset from the Crown.

In or before 1628 [his father] Thomas Freke [aged 64] and [his mother] Elizabeth Taylor were married.

On 20th December 1632 John Freke [aged 41] and Jane Shirley Baroness Holles were married.

On 5th May 1633 [his father] Thomas Freke [aged 69] died.

In January 1636 John Freke [aged 45] was appointed High Sheriff of Dorset which office he held until Oct 1636.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

In 1640 [his mother] Elizabeth Taylor died.

On 28th November 1641 John Freke [aged 50] died.

In 1642 Denzil Holles 1st Baron Holles [aged 42] and [his former wife] Jane Shirley Baroness Holles were married. He the son of John Holles 1st Earl de Clare and Anne Stanhope Countess de Clare [aged 66]. They were sixth cousins.

On 25th April 1666 [his former wife] Jane Shirley Baroness Holles died.

[his daughter] Jane Freke was born to John Freke and Jane Shirley Baroness Holles. She married in or before 1664 Robert Dillington 2nd Baronet and had issue.

[his son] George Freke of Sherbourne in Dorset was born to John Freke and Jane Shirley Baroness Holles. He married his fourth cousin once removed Abigail Digby, daughter of John Digby 1st Earl Bristol and Beatrice Walcott.
