Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Around May 1749 Henry Grey 1st Baronet [aged 57] died. His son Henry [aged 27] succeeded 2nd Baronet Grey of Howick in Northumberland.

In 1808 Henry Grey 2nd Baronet [aged 86] died. His nephew Charles [aged 43] succeeded 3rd Baronet Grey of Howick in Northumberland.

On 29th July 1814 George Grey 1st Baronet [aged 46] was created 1st Baronet Grey of Fallodon. Mary Whitbread Lady Grey [aged 44] by marriage Lady Grey of Fallodon.

On 3rd October 1828 George Grey 1st Baronet [aged 60] died at the Commissioner's Residence Portsmouth Dockyard. His son George [aged 29] succeeded 2nd Baronet Grey of Fallodon.

Before 21st March 1835 George Grey 2nd Baronet [aged 35] and Anne Sophia Ryder Lady Grey [aged 29] were married. She by marriage Lady Grey of Fallodon. She the daughter of Bishop Henry Dudley Ryder [aged 57].

On 9th September 1882 George Grey 2nd Baronet [aged 83] died. His grandson Edward [aged 20] succeeded 3rd Baronet Grey of Fallodon.

On 7th September 1933 Edward Grey 1st Viscount Fallodon [aged 71] died. Viscount Grey of Fallodon in Northumberland extinct. His second cousin Charles [aged 53] succeeded 4th Baronet Grey of Fallodon.

On 12th December 1957 Charles George Grey 4th Baronet [aged 77] died. His brother Harry [aged 75] succeeded 5th Baronet Grey of Fallodon.

On 12th December 1960 Harry Martin Grey 5th Baronet [aged 78] died. His first cousin Robin [aged 74] succeeded 6th Baronet Grey of Fallodon.

On 2nd June 1974 Robin Edward Dysart Grey 6th Baronet [aged 87] died. His grandson Anthony [aged 24] succeeded 7th Baronet Grey of Fallodon.
