Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire 1st Creation 1611

On 22nd April 1637 Robert Napier 1st Baronet [aged 77] died. His son Robert [aged 34] succeeded 2nd Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. Penelope Egerton Lady Napier [aged 28] by marriage Lady Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

In March 1661 Robert Napier 2nd Baronet [aged 58] died. His grandson Robert succeeded 3rd Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire although it appears he may have been disinherited by his grandfather and probably never assumed the title.

On or before 5th April 1675 Robert Napier 3rd Baronet died unmarried. His uncle John [aged 39] succeeded 4th Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. Since the 3rd Baroent may have been subject to disinheritance, and the Baronetcy recreated, John Napier 4th or 1st Baronet is sometimes referred to as the 1st Baronet.

In August 1711 John Napier 4th or 1st Baronet [aged 75] died. His son Theophilus succeeded 5th Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

Around 1719 Theophilus Napier 5th or 2nd Baronet died without issue. His nephew John succeeded 6th Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

In 1747 John Napier 6th or 3rd Baronet died. Baronet Napier of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire extinct.

Baronet Napier of Merchistoun 2nd Creation 1627

In November 1645 Archibald Napier 1st Baronet [aged 69] died. His son Archibald [aged 20] succeeded 2nd Baronet Napier of Merchistoun, 2nd Lord Napier of Merchistoun.

On 4th September 1658 Archibald Napier 2nd Baronet [aged 33] died. His son Archibald succeeded 3rd Baronet Napier of Merchistoun, 3rd Lord Napier of Merchistoun.

In 1683 Archibald Napier 3rd Baronet died unmarried and without issue. Baronet Napier of Merchistoun dormant. His nephew Thomas succeeded 4th Lord Napier of Merchistoun.

Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset 3rd Creation 1641

On 21st January 1709 Nathaniel Napier 2nd Baronet [aged 73] died. His son Nathaniel [aged 41] succeeded 3rd Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset. Catherine Alington Lady Napier [aged 24] by marriage Lady Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset.

On 24th February 1728 Nathaniel Napier 3rd Baronet [aged 60] died at Moor Crichel, Dorset. His son William [aged 28] succeeded 4th Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset.

On 27th January 1753 William Napier 4th Baronet [aged 53] died. His brother Gerard [aged 52] succeeded 5th Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset.

On 25th October 1759 Gerard Napier 5th Baronet [aged 58] died. His son Gerard [aged 20] succeeded 6th Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset.

On 25th January 1775 Gerard Napier 6th Baronet [aged 36] died. Baronet Napier of Middle Marsh in Dorset extinct.

Baronet Napier of Punknoll 4th Creation 1682
