The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Battle of Baugé

On 22nd March 1421 the Dauphin's (age 18) French army and a Scottish army heavily defeated the English army at the Battle of Baugé. On the French side Étienne Vignolles "La Hire" fought. On the Scottish side John Stewart 2nd Earl Buchan (age 40) and John Stewart of Darnley 1st Count Évreux (age 41) fought. William Douglas (age 37) was killed.

On the English side John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 18), [his uncle] Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter (age 44), [his brother] Thomas Beaufort Count Perche (age 16) and John Holland 2nd Duke Exeter (age 26) were captured. John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset would be captive for the next seventeen years. Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter was released in 1422. Thomas Beaufort Count Perche was released around 1427 in a prisoner exchange.

Coronation of James I of Scotland

On 21st May 1424 [his brother-in-law] King James I of Scotland (age 29) was crowned I King Scotland at Scone Abbey [Map]. [his sister] Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland (age 20) was crowned Queen Consort Scotland.

Assassination of King James I of Scotland

On 21st February 1437 [his brother-in-law] King James I of Scotland (age 42) was assassinated at Blackfriars. He was buried at Carthusian Charterhouse, Perth. His son [his nephew] James (age 6) succeeded II King Scotland. His wife, [his sister] Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland (age 33), managed to escape.

In 1438 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 35) was released after have been captive for seventeen years following his capture at the Battle of Baugé.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

In 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40) was appointed 156th Knight of the Garter by King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 21).

1443 Beaufort Campaign

In April 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40) declared himself Lieutenant of Aquitaine and Captain-General of Guyenne. He was paid £25,000 attracting the enmity of Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke of York (age 31) whose significants debts remained unpaid by the Crown.

In September 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40) led 7000 men to Cherbourg [Map]. He returned around December 1443 having achieved nothing but the loss of all his funds and, possibly, half his men.

In August 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40) landed 7000 men at Cherbourg [Map] and then marched south. His campaign achieved little being bought off by Francis Montfort I Duke Brittany (age 29). He marched through Maine [Map] then returned to England in the winter of 1443.

Chronicle of Gregory [1400-1467]. 8th September 1443. And on the same year, the viij day of Septembyr, there was done a grete vyage yn Fraunce by the Duke of Somesette (age 40) and his retynowe; and at the same viage were slayne and takyn to the nombyr of iij M vij c [3700], whereof were ix lordys and a squyer, whyche that was a grete captayne.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

Before 20th June 1443 [his illegitimate daughter] Tacine Beaufort Baroness Grey Wilton was born illegitimately to John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40). She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married 27th September 1447 her fourth cousin Reginald Grey 7th Baron Grey of Wilton, son of Richard Grey 6th Baron Grey of Wilton and Blanche Vache Baroness Grey Wilton, and had issue.

On 28th August 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 40) was created 1st Duke Somerset, 1st Earl Kendal by King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 21). [his wife] Margaret Beauchamp Duchess Somerset (age 33) by marriage Duchess Somerset.

Around 1444 [his illegitimate son] John Beaufort was born illegitimately to John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 41). He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. He died aged nine in 1453.

On 30th May 1444 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 41) committed suicide. Suicide not certain but likely. Duke Somerset, Earl Kendal extinct. His brother [his brother] Edmund (age 38) succeeded 4th Earl Somerset. [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Beauchamp Duchess Somerset (age 35) by marriage Countess Somerset.

His only child [his daughter] Margaret Beaufort Countess Richmond aged one was his heir. King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 22) granted her wardship to William "Jackanapes" de la Pole 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 47) who married her to his son [his future son-in-law] John de la Pole 2nd Duke of Suffolk (age 1).

On 14th April 1447 Lionel Welles 6th Baron Welles (age 41) and [his former wife] Margaret Beauchamp Duchess Somerset (age 37) were married. She by marriage Baroness Welles. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward I of England.

On 8th August 1482 [his former wife] Margaret Beauchamp Duchess Somerset (age 72) died. She was buried at Wimborne Minster, Dorset [Map].
