Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On 12th December 1821 [his father] Robert William Shirley [aged 38] and [his mother] Anne Weston were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Washington Shirley 8th Earl Ferrers [aged 61] and [his grandmother] Frances Ward.
On 3rd January 1822 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers was born to Robert William Shirley [aged 38] and Anne Weston.
On 2nd February 1830 [his father] Robert William Shirley [aged 46] died.
Around 1834 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 11] educated at Eton College [Map].
On 7th October 1839 [his mother] Anne Weston died.
On 2nd October 1842 [his grandfather] Washington Shirley 8th Earl Ferrers [aged 81] died. His grandson Washington [aged 20] succeeded 9th Earl Ferrers, 15th Baronet Shirley of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire.
On 23rd July 1844 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 22] and Annabella Augusta Chichester Countess Ferrers were married. She by marriage Countess Ferrers. She the daughter of Edward Chichester 4th Marquess Donegal [aged 45] and Amelia Ogrady Marchioness County Donegal.
On 16th July 1845 [his son] Stillborn Shirley was born to Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 23] and [his wife] Annabella Augusta Chichester Countess Ferrers.
On 24th January 1847 [his son] Sewallis Edward Shirley 10th Earl Ferrers was born to Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 25] and [his wife] Annabella Augusta Chichester Countess Ferrers. He married 24th October 1885 Ina Maude Hedges-White Countess Ferrers, daughter of William Henry Hare Hedges-White 3rd Earl Bantry.
Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 6th September 1849 [his daughter] Amelia Anne Shirley died.
On 25th December 1849 [his daughter] Augusta Amelia Shirley Shirley was born to Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 27] and [his wife] Annabella Augusta Chichester Countess Ferrers. She married 19th August 1873 Archibald Palmer.
On 10th February 1852 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 30] was appointed Deputy Lieutenant Leicestershire.
On 16th July 1853 [his son] Devereux Hugh Lupus Shirley was born to Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 31] and [his wife] Annabella Augusta Chichester Countess Ferrers. He died aged less than one years old.
On 22nd February 1854 [his son] Devereux Hugh Lupus Shirley died.
On 10th January 1857 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 35] was appointed Deputy Lieutenant Staffordshire.
On 13th March 1859 Washington Sewallis Shirley 9th Earl Ferrers [aged 37] died at Staunton Harold, Leicestershire [Map]. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church Staunton Harold, Leicestershire [Map]. His son Sewallis [aged 12] succeeded 10th Earl Ferrers, 16th Baronet Shirley of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire.
