Biography of Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon 1105-1159

Paternal Family Tree: Poitiers

In 1088 [her father] William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine (age 16) and [her step-mother] Ermengarde Anjou Duchess Brittany and Aquitaine (age 20) were married. She by marriage Duchess Aquitaine. She the daughter of Fulk "Réchin" Anjou 4th Count Anjou (age 45) and Hildegarde Beaugency Countess Anjou (age 44). He the son of [her grandfather] Guy William Poitiers VIII Duke Aquitaine and [her grandmother] Hildegarde Burgundy Duchess Aquitaine (age 32). They were half first cousins.

In 1094 [her father] William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine (age 22) and [her mother] Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine were married. She by marriage Duchess Aquitaine. She the daughter of [her grandfather] William Rouerge Duke Narbonne (age 54) and [her grandmother] Emma Mortain Duchess Narbonne. He the son of [her grandfather] Guy William Poitiers VIII Duke Aquitaine and [her grandmother] Hildegarde Burgundy Duchess Aquitaine (age 38).

Around 1105 Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon was born to [her father] William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine (age 33) and [her mother] Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine.

In 1125 [her son] Geoffrey Thouars IV Viscount Thouars was born to Aimery Thouars V Viscount Thouars (age 35) and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 20). He married before 1140 his half second cousin Aenor Lusignan Viscountess Thouars, daughter of Hugh "Brown" VII of Lusignan II Count of La Marche and Saracine Lezay Countess Lusignan and La Marche, and had issue.

On 10th February 1127 [her father] William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine (age 55) died. His son [her brother] William (age 28) succeeded X Duke Aquitaine.

In 1134 Alfonso I King Aragon I King Pamplona (age 61) died. His brother [her future husband] Ramiro (age 47) succeeded I King Aragon.

On or before 11th August 1136 Ramiro "Monk" II King Aragon (age 50) and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 31) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Aragon. She the daughter of William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine and Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine. He the son of Sancho Ramírez I King Aragon V King Pamplona and Felicia Montdidier Queen Consort Aragon and Pamplona.

On 11th August 1136 [her daughter] Petronilla Jiménez Queen Aragon was born to [her husband] Ramiro "Monk" II King Aragon (age 50) and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 31). She married August 1150 her fourth cousin Raymond Berenguer Barcelona V Count Barcelona, son of Raymond Berenguer Barcelona III Count Barcelona and Douce Gevaudan Countess Barcelona, and had issue.

On 9th April 1137 [her brother] William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine (age 38) died. His daughter [her niece] Eleanor (age 15) succeeded XI Duchess Aquitaine.

Marriage of Prince Louis and Eleanor of Aquitaine

On 25th July 1137 Louis VII King Franks (age 17) and [her niece] Eleanor of Aquitaine Queen Consort Franks and England (age 15) were married at the Cathedral of Saint-André, Bordeaux [Map] by Archbishop Geoffrey of Loroux. Her father [her brother] William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine had died some three months previously leaving Eleanor of Aquitaine Queen Consort Franks and England as a ward of Louis's father King Louis VI of France (age 55) who quickly married her to his son Louis with a view to the Duchy of Aquitaine becoming joined with the Kingdom of France. A week later King Louis VI of France died and his son Louis and Eleanor became King and Queen of France. She the daughter of William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine and Aenor Chatellerault Duchess Aquitaine. He the son of King Louis VI of France and Adelaide Savoy Queen Consort France. They were third cousin once removed.

Eleanor gave Louis a rock-crystal vase as a wedding gift which he subsequently gave to Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis. The vase is now in the Louvre.

Crystal vase, 'of Eleanor'. Crystal: Iran (?), 6th-7th century (?). Mounting: Saint-Denis, before 1147; 13th and 14th centuries. Rock crystal, nielloed and gilded silver, precious stones, pearls, champlevé enamels on silver. Originating from the treasury of the Abbey of Saint-Denis. Inscription: "+ HOC VAS SPONSA DEDIT A(ie)NOR-REGI LUDOVICO MITADOL(us) AVO MIHI REX S(an)C(tis)Q(ue) SUGER(ius)" (This vase, Eleanor, his spouse, gave it to King Louis, Mitadolus to his ancestor, the king to me, Suger, who have offered it to the saints).

Vase de cristal, "d'Aliénor". Cristal: Iran (?), VI-VII siécle (?). Monture: Saint-Denis, avant 1147; XIII et XIV siécles. Cristal de roche, argent niellé et doré, pierres pécieuses, perles, émaux champlevés sur argent Provient du trésor de I'abbaye de Saint-Denis. Inscription: "+ HOC VAS SPONSA DEDIT A(ie)NOR-REGI LUDOVICO MITADOL(us) AVO MIHI REX S(an)C(tis)Q(ue) SUGER(ius)". (ce vase, Aliénor, son épouse, l'a donné au roi Lous, Mitadolus a son aïeul, le roi à moi, Suger, qui l'ai offert aux saints).

Archbishop Geoffrey of Loroux: In 1137 he was appointed Archbishop of Bordeaux. On 18th July 1155 he died.

William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine: William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine and Aenor Chatellerault Duchess Aquitaine were married. She by marriage Duchess Aquitaine. He the son of William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine and Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine. In 1099 he was born to William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine and Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine at Toulose. On 10th February 1127 William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine died. His son William succeeded X Duke Aquitaine. On 9th April 1137 William "Saint" Poitiers X Duke Aquitaine died. His daughter Eleanor succeeded XI Duchess Aquitaine.

On 13th November 1137 [her husband] Ramiro "Monk" II King Aragon (age 51) abdicated. [her daughter] Petronilla Jiménez Queen Aragon (age 1) succeeded Queen Aragon.

Before 1140 [her son] Geoffrey Thouars IV Viscount Thouars (age 14) and [her daughter-in-law] Aenor Lusignan Viscountess Thouars (age 9) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Thouars. She the daughter of Hugh "Brown" VII of Lusignan II Count of La Marche (age 74) and Saracine Lezay Countess Lusignan and La Marche. He the son of Aimery Thouars V Viscount Thouars and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 34). They were half second cousins.

In August 1150 [her son-in-law] Raymond Berenguer Barcelona V Count Barcelona (age 36) and [her daughter] Petronilla Jiménez Queen Aragon (age 13) were married. She by marriage Countess Barcelona. The difference in their ages was 22 years. She the daughter of [her husband] Ramiro "Monk" II King Aragon (age 64) and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 45). He the son of Raymond Berenguer Barcelona III Count Barcelona and Douce Gevaudan Countess Barcelona. They were fourth cousins.

On 16th August 1157 [her husband] Ramiro "Monk" II King Aragon (age 71) died. He had abdicted in fabour of his daughter [her daughter] Petronilla Jiménez Queen Aragon (age 21) some twenty years before.

Around 1159 Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon (age 54) died.

Aimery Thouars V Viscount Thouars and Agnes Poitiers Queen Consort Aragon were married. She by marriage Viscountess Thouars. She the daughter of William "Troubadour" Poitiers IX Duke Aquitaine and Philippa Rouerge Duchess Aquitaine.
