Biography of Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu 1275-1345

Before January 1273 [her future husband] Thomas Furnival 1st Baron Furnivall (age 13) and Joan Despencer Baroness Furnivall (age 15) were married.

In 1275 Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu was born to Peter Montfort (age 30) at Beaudesert, Warwickshire.

On 4th March 1287 [her father] Peter Montfort (age 42) died at Beaudesert Castle, Warwickshire.

In or before 1301 William Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu (age 25) and Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 25) were married.

In 1301 [her son] William Montagu 1st Earl Salisbury was born to [her husband] William Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu (age 26) and Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 26).

In 1316 [her father-in-law] Simon Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 66) died. His son [her husband] William (age 41) succeeded 2nd Baron Montagu. Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 41) by marriage Baroness Montagu.

In 1317 [her son] John Montagu and [her daughter-in-law] Joan Verdun Baroness Furnivall (age 13) were married at Royal Chapel Windsor Castle.

Before 14th August 1317 [her son] John Montagu died. On 14th August 1317 John Montagu was buried at Lincoln Cathedral [Map].

On 18th October 1319 [her husband] William Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu (age 44) died at Gascony [Map]. His son [her son] William (age 18) succeeded 3rd Baron Montagu.

Around 1320 [her son] William Montagu 1st Earl Salisbury (age 19) and [her daughter-in-law] Catherine Grandison Countess of Salisbury (age 16) were married. She by marriage Baroness Montagu.

Before 8th June 1322 Thomas Furnival 1st Baron Furnivall (age 62) and Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 47) were married. She by marriage Baroness Furnivall.

On 3rd February 1332 [her husband] Thomas Furnival 1st Baron Furnivall (age 72) died at Sheffield [Map]. His son Thomas succeeded 2nd Baron Furnivall. [her former daughter-in-law] Joan Verdun Baroness Furnivall (age 28) by marriage Baroness Furnivall.

Before 29th August 1338 [her son] Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and [her daughter-in-law] Alice Plantagenet (age 14) were married. She the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton 1st Earl Norfolk (deceased) and Alice Hales Countess Norfolk.

In 1345 [her son] Bishop Simon Montagu died.

In August 1345 Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 70) died. She was buried at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford [Map].

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
