Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew 1865-1932

Around 1865 Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew was born to Gowran Charles Vernon [aged 39] and Caroline Fazakerly [aged 37]. The exact date of her birth is uncertain; it may been in 1864.

On 15th January 1872 [her father] Gowran Charles Vernon [aged 46] died.

In 1884 [her mother] Caroline Fazakerly [aged 56] died.

On 15th October 1889 Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet [aged 39] and Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew [aged 24] were married. They were sixth cousins.

1892. John Singer Sargent [aged 35]. "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw [aged 27]". Commissioned by [her husband] Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet [aged 41]. The subject is believed to have been recovering from illness, which may account for the languor in her pose.

The portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893 and may have been influential in Sargent becoming an associate of the Academy the following January.

The portrait was purchased in 1925 by the National Gallery of Scotland with funds from the James Cowan Smith bequest.

Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet: On 14th August 1850 he was born to Andrew Agnew 8th Baronet and Mary Arabella Louisa Noel. On 15th October 1889 Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet and Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew were married. They were sixth cousins. On 25th March 1892 Andrew Agnew 8th Baronet died. His succeeded son Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet succeeded 9th Baronet Agnew of Lochnaw in Wigtownshire. Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew by marriage Lady Agnew of Lochnaw in Wigtownshire. On 14th July 1928 Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet died.

On 25th March 1892 [her father-in-law] Andrew Agnew 8th Baronet [aged 74] died. His succeeded son [her husband] Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet [aged 41] succeeded 9th Baronet Agnew of Lochnaw in Wigtownshire. Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew [aged 27] by marriage Lady Agnew of Lochnaw in Wigtownshire.

On 14th July 1928 [her husband] Andrew Agnew 9th Baronet [aged 77] died.

In April 1932 Gertrude Vernon Lady Agnew [aged 67] died.
