William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 24th May 1107 [his father] Raymond Ivrea [aged 37] died.

On 1st July 1109 Alfonso "Brave" VI King Leon VI King Castile [aged 68] died. His daughter Urracca [aged 30] succeeded Queen Leon, Queen Castile and Queen Galicia.

In 1126 Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 20] succeeded VII King Castile, VII King Leon.

In November 1128 Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 23] and Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon [aged 12] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile, Queen Consort Leon. She the daughter of Raymond III Count Barcelona [aged 45] and Douce Gevaudan Countess Barcelona. He the son of Raymond Ivrea and Urracca "Reckless" Jiménez Queen Consort Aragon and Pamplona. They were third cousin once removed.

On 19th July 1131 [his father-in-law] Raymond III Count Barcelona [aged 48] died. His son Raymond [aged 17] succeeded V Count Barcelona.

Around 1139 [his daughter] Sancha Ivrea was born to Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 33] and Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon [aged 23]. She was the fifth child of seven born to her parents. She married 20th July 1153 her fourth cousin Sancho "Wise" King Navarre, son of García "Restorer" IV King Navarre and Marguerite Aigle Queen Consort Navarre, and had issue.

Around 1140 Constance of Castile Queen of the Franks was born to Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 34] and Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon [aged 24]. She married 1154 her second cousin Louis VII King of the Franks and had issue.

On 15th January 1149 Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon [aged 33] died.

In 1153 [his daughter] Ferdinand Ivrea was born to Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 47] and Richeza Unknown Queen Consort Castile Queen Consort Leon. She died aged four in 1157.

In 1154 Louis VII King of the Franks [aged 34] and Constance of Castile Queen of the Franks [aged 14] were married in Orléans. She by marriage Queen of the Franks. Somewhat curiously they were more closely related than Louis and his first wife Eleanor of Aquitaine [aged 32] whose marriage had been annulled on account of consanguinity. The difference in their ages was 20 years. She the daughter of Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 48] and Berenguela Barcelona Queen Consort Castile and Leon. He the son of Louis VI King of the Franks and Adelaide Savoy Queen Consort France. They were second cousins.

In 1157 [his daughter] Ferdinand Ivrea [aged 4] died.

On 21st August 1157 Alfonso VII King Castile VII King Leon [aged 52] died. His son Sancho [aged 23] succeeded III King Castile. His son Ferdinand [aged 20] succeeded II King Leon.

[his father] Raymond Ivrea and Urracca "Reckless" Jiménez Queen Consort Aragon and Pamplona were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Alfonso "Brave" VI King Leon VI King Castile and [his grandmother] Constance Burgundy Queen Consort Castile and Leon. He the son of William I Count Burgundy and Ettiennette Countess Burgundy. They were fourth cousin once removed.
