William Wheler 5th Baronet 1704-1763

Paternal Family Tree: Wheler

On 15th January 1696 [his father] William Wheeler 3rd Baronet [aged 42] and [his mother] Teresa Widdrington were married by the Chaplain to the Portuguese Envoy at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map].

Around 1704, and before 30th May 1705 when his younger brother Charles was baptised, William Wheler 5th Baronet was born to William Wheeler 3rd Baronet [aged 50] and Teresa Widdrington.

On 23rd February 1709 [his father] William Wheeler 3rd Baronet [aged 55] died. He was buried at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings. His son [his brother] Trevor [aged 11] succeeded 4th Baronet Wheler of the City of Westminster.

On 1st February 1712 William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 8] entered Rugby School.

On or before 7th May 1718 [his mother] Teresa Widdrington died. She was buried on 7th May 1718 at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings.

A month before his twenty-first birthday, Trevor Wheler 4th Baronet [aged 20] died unmarried. He was buried at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings on 17th October 1718. His brother William [aged 14] succeeded 5th Baronet Wheler of the City of Westminster.

On 5th May 1720 William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 16] matriculated Magdalen College, Oxford University.

In or before 1726 William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 21] and Penelope Glynne Lady Wheler were married. She by marriage Lady Wheler of the City of Westminster.

On 16th July 1726 [his son] William Wheeler 6th Baronet was born to William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 22] and [his wife] Penelope Glynne Lady Wheler. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings on 4th August 1726. He married before 17th May 1753 Lucy Knightley Lady Wheler and had issue.

On 22nd December 1730 [his son] Charles Wheler 7th Baronet was born to William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 26] and [his wife] Penelope Glynne Lady Wheler. He married 20th January 1762 Lucy Strange Lady Wheler and had issue.

On or before 23rd January 1740 [his wife] Penelope Glynne Lady Wheler died. She was buried on 23rd January 1740 at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 20th January 1762 [his son] Charles Wheler 7th Baronet [aged 31] and [his daughter-in-law] Lucy Strange Lady Wheler were married.

On or before 4th June 1763 William Wheler 5th Baronet [aged 59] died. He was buried at All Saints' Church, Leamington Hastings on 4th June 1763. His son William [aged 36] succeeded 6th Baronet Wheler of the City of Westminster. Lucy Knightley Lady Wheler by marriage Lady Wheler of the City of Westminster.
