Paternal Family Tree: Croft

In 1603 Bishop Herbert Croft was born to Herbert Croft [aged 38].

On 1st April 1629 [his father] Herbert Croft [aged 64] died.

Around 1651 [his son] Herbert Croft 1st Baronet was born to Bishop Herbert Croft [aged 48]. He married before 2nd March 1683 Elizabeth Archer Lady Croft and had issue.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 14th October 1660. To White Hall chappell, where one Dr. Crofts [aged 57] made an indifferent sermon, and after it an anthem, ill sung, which made the King laugh. Here I first did see the Princess Royal since she came into England. Here I also observed, how the Duke of York and Mrs. Palmer [aged 19] did talk to one another very wantonly through the hangings that parts the King's [aged 30] closet and the closet where the ladies sit. To my Lord's, where I found my wife, and she and I did dine with my Lady (my Lord dining with my Lord Chamberlain [aged 58]), who did treat my wife with a good deal of respect. In the evening we went home through the rain by water in a sculler, having borrowed some coats of Mr. Sheply. So home, wet and dirty, and to bed.

In 1661 Bishop Herbert Croft [aged 58] was appointed Bishop of Hereford.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 17th March 1667. Then I went back to White Hall, and there up to the closet, and spoke with several people till sermon was ended, which was preached by the Bishop of Hereford [aged 64], an old good man, that they say made an excellent sermon. He was by birth a Catholique, and a great gallant, having £1500 per annum, patrimony, and is a Knight Barronet; was turned from his persuasion by the late Archbishop Laud. He and the Bishop of Exeter, Dr. Ward, are the two Bishops that the King [aged 36] do say he cannot have bad sermons from. Here I met with Sir H. Cholmly [aged 34], who tells me, that undoubtedly my Lord Bellasses [aged 52] do go no more to Tangier, and that he do believe he do stand in a likely way to go Governor; though he says, and showed me, a young silly Lord, one Lord Allington [aged 27], who hath offered a great sum of money to go, and will put hard for it, he having a fine lady [aged 22], and a great man would be glad to have him out of the way.

John Evelyn's Diary. 1st March 1669. Dined at Lord Arlington's [aged 51] at Goring House [Map], with the Bishop of Hereford [aged 66].

Before 2nd March 1683 Herbert Croft 1st Baronet [aged 32] and Elizabeth Archer Lady Croft were married. He the son of Bishop Herbert Croft [aged 80].

In 1691 Bishop Herbert Croft [aged 88] died.
