William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington 1640-1685

Before 1st October 1631 [his father] William Alington 1st Baron Alington [aged 20] and [his mother] Elizabeth Tollemache Baroness Alington were married.

In or before 1640 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington was born to William Alington 1st Baron Alington [aged 28] and Elizabeth Tollemache Baroness Alington.

On 28th July 1642 [his father] William Alington 1st Baron Alington [aged 31] was created 1st Baron Alington of Killard. [his mother] Elizabeth Tollemache Baroness Alington by marriage Baroness Alington of Killard.

Before 25th October 1648 [his step-father] William Compton [aged 23] and [his mother] Elizabeth Tollemache Baroness Alington were married. He the son of Spencer Compton 2nd Earl of Northampton and Mary Beaumont Countess of Northampton [aged 44]. They were half sixth cousins.

Before 25th October 1648 [his father] William Alington 1st Baron Alington [aged 37] died. He was buried on 25th October 1648. His succeeded son [his brother] Giles Alington 2nd Baron Alington [aged 1] succeeded 2nd Baron Alington of Killard.

In 1654 [his brother-in-law] Charles Seymour 2nd Baron Seymour of Trowbridge [aged 33] and [his sister] Eizabeth Alington 2nd Baroness Seymour Trowbridge [aged 18] were married. Eizabeth Alington 2nd Baroness Seymour Trowbridge by marriage Baroness Seymour of Trowbridge. They had five sons and two daughters. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Around March 1660 Giles Alington 2nd Baron Alington [aged 13] died. His succeeded brother William [aged 20] succeeded 3rd Baron Alington of Killard.

Before 1662 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 21] and Catherine Stanhope Baroness Alington were married. Catherine Stanhope Baroness Alington by marriage Baroness Alington of Killard. She the daughter of Henry Stanhope and Katherine Wotton Countess Chesterfield [aged 52]. They were third cousin once removed.

On 19th November 1662 [his wife] Catherine Stanhope Baroness Alington died.

On 30th July 1664 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 24] and Juliana Noel Baroness Alington [aged 19] were married. Juliana Noel Baroness Alington by marriage Baroness Alington of Killard.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 17th March 1667. Then I went back to White Hall, and there up to the closet, and spoke with several people till sermon was ended, which was preached by the Bishop of Hereford [aged 64], an old good man, that they say made an excellent sermon. He was by birth a Catholique, and a great gallant, having £1500 per annum, patrimony, and is a Knight Barronet; was turned from his persuasion by the late Archbishop Laud. He and the Bishop of Exeter, Dr. Ward, are the two Bishops that the King [aged 36] do say he cannot have bad sermons from. Here I met with Sir H. Cholmly [aged 34], who tells me, that undoubtedly my Lord Bellasses [aged 52] do go no more to Tangier, and that he do believe he do stand in a likely way to go Governor; though he says, and showed me, a young silly Lord, one Lord Allington [aged 27], who hath offered a great sum of money to go, and will put hard for it, he having a [his wife] Juliana Noel Baroness Alington [aged 22], and a great man would be glad to have him out of the way.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 24th March 1667. Away thence, and met with Sir H. Cholmly [aged 34], who tells me that he do believe the government of Tangier is bought by my Lord Allington [aged 27] for a sum of money to my Lord Arlington [aged 49], and something to Lord Bellasses [aged 52], who (he did tell me particularly how) is as very a false villain as ever was born, having received money of him here upon promise and confidence of his return, forcing him to pay it by advance here, and promising to ask no more there, when at the same time he was treating with my Lord Allington to sell his command to him, and yet told Sir H. Cholmly nothing of it, but when Sir H. Cholmly told him what he had heard, he confessed that my Lord Allington had spoken to him of it, but that he was a vain man to look after it, for he was nothing fit for it, and then goes presently to my Lord Allington and drives on the bargain, yet tells Lord Allington what he himself had said of him, as [though] Sir H. Cholmly had said them. I am glad I am informed hereof, and shall know him for a Lord, &c. Sir H. Cholmly tells me further that he is confident there will be a peace, and that a great man did tell him that my Lord Albemarle [aged 58] did tell him the other day at White Hall as a secret that we should have a peace if any thing the King of France [aged 28] can ask and our King can give will gain it, which he is it seems mad at.

On 29th August 1667 Greville Verney 17th Baron Latimer 9th Baron Willoughby [aged 18] and [his future wife] Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 15] were married. Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington by marriage Baroness Latimer of Corby, Baroness Willoughby Broke. She the daughter of [his future father-in-law] William Russell 1st Duke Bedford [aged 51] and [his future mother-in-law] Anne Carr Countess of Bedford [aged 51]. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 14th September 1667 [his wife] Juliana Noel Baroness Alington [aged 22] died.

John Evelyn's Diary. 20th July 1670. We went to dine at Lord Allington's [aged 30], who had newly built a house of great cost, I believe a little less than £20,000. His architect was Mr. Pratt [aged 50]. It is seated in a park, with a sweet prospect and stately avenue; but water still defective; the house has also its infirmities. Went back to Mr. Slingsby's [aged 49].

Around April 1671 [his mother] Elizabeth Tollemache Baroness Alington died.

John Evelyn's Diary. 26th May 1671. The Earl of Bristol's [aged 58] house in Queen's Street was taken for the Commissioners of Trade and Plantations, and furnished with rich hangings of the King's [aged 40]. It consisted of seven rooms on a floor, with a long gallery, gardens, etc. This day we met the Duke of Buckingham [aged 43], Earl of Lauderdale [aged 55], Lord Culpeper, Sir George Carteret [aged 61], Vice-Chamberlain, and myself, had the oaths given us by the Earl of Sandwich [aged 45], our President. It was to advise and counsel his Majesty, to the best of our abilities, for the well-governing of his Foreign Plantations, etc., the form very little differing from that given to the Privy Council. We then took our places at the Board in the Council-Chamber, a very large room furnished with atlases, maps, charts, globes, etc. Then came the Lord Keeper, Sir Orlando Bridgeman [aged 65], Earl of Arlington [aged 53], Secretary of State, Lord Ashley, Mr. Treasurer [aged 40], Sir John Trevor [aged 34], the other Secretary, Sir John Duncomb [aged 49], Lord Allington [aged 31], Mr. Grey, son to the Lord Grey, Mr. Henry Broncher, Sir Humphrey Winch [aged 49], Sir John Finch, Mr. Waller [aged 65], and Colonel Titus [aged 48], of the bedchamber, with Mr. Slingsby, Secretary to the Council, and two Clerks of the Council, who had all been sworn some days before. Being all set, our Patent was read, and then the additional Patent, in which was recited this new establishment; then, was delivered to each a copy of the Patent, and of instructions: after which, we proceeded to business.

On 15th July 1675 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 35] and Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 23] were married. Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington by marriage Baroness Alington of Killard. She the daughter of William Russell 1st Duke Bedford [aged 58] and Anne Carr Countess of Bedford [aged 59]. They were sixth cousins.

In 1680 [his son] Giles Alington 2nd and 4th Baron Alington was born to William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 40] and [his wife] Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 27]. He died aged eleven in 1691.

In 1682 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 42] was created 1st Baron Alington of Wymondley in Hertfordshire. [his wife] Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 29] by marriage Baroness Alington of Wymondley in Hertfordshire.

On 23rd August 1683 [his step-son] William Verney 18th Baron Latimer 10th Baron Willoughby [aged 15] died. He was buried at Compton Verney Chapel [Map]. His succeeded great uncle Richard [aged 62] succeeded 19th Baron Latimer of Corby, 11th Baron Willoughby Broke.

Before 1685 [his daughter] Catherine Alington Lady Napier was born to William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 44] and [his wife] Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 32]. She married 28th August 1694 Nathaniel Napier 3rd Baronet, son of Nathaniel Napier 2nd Baronet and Blanche Wyndham Lady Napier, and had issue.

On 1st February 1685 William Alington 1st and 3rd Baron Alington [aged 45] died. His succeeded son Giles Alington 2nd and 4th Baron Alington [aged 5] succeeded 4th Baron Alington of Killard, 2nd Baron Alington of Wymondley in Hertfordshire.

In 1701 [his former wife] Diana Russell Baroness Latimer Willoughby Broke Alington [aged 48] died.
