John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester 1510-1576

In 1503 [his father] William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 20] and [his mother] Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester were married.

Around 1510 John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester was born to William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 27] and Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester.

Before 20th October 1528 John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 18] and Elizabeth Willoughby were married. He the son of William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 45] and Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester. They were half fifth cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Around 1531 Anthony Ughtred [aged 53] and [his future wife] Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham [aged 13] were married. The difference in their ages was 40 years.

In 1532 [his son] William Paulet 3rd Marquess Winchester was born to John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Willoughby. He married 20th June 1544 his fourth cousin twice removed Agnes Howard Marchioness Winchester, daughter of William Howard 1st Baron Howard and Katherine Broughton, and had issue.

Before 1536 Richard Sackville [aged 28] and [his future wife] Winifred Brydges Marchioness Winchester were married.

On 3rd August 1537 Gregory Cromwell 1st Baron Cromwell Oakham [aged 17] and [his future wife] Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham [aged 19] were married at Mortlake, Richmond. He the son of Thomas Cromwell 1st Earl Essex [aged 52] and Elizabeth Wyckes.

On 18th December 1540 Gregory Cromwell 1st Baron Cromwell Oakham [aged 20] was created 1st Baron Cromwell Oakham. [his future wife] Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham [aged 22] by marriage Baroness Cromwell Oakham.

Between 20th June 1544 and 10th February 1548 William Paulet 3rd Marquess Winchester [aged 12] and Agnes Howard Marchioness Winchester [aged 9] were married. He the son of John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 34] and Elizabeth Willoughby. They were fourth cousin twice removed.

On 28th November 1545 [his son-in-law] William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon [aged 16] and Elizabeth Paulett Countess Devon were married. She the daughter of John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 35] and Elizabeth Willoughby. They were fourth cousin once removed.

Around March 1554 John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 44] and Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham [aged 36] were married. He the son of William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 71] and Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester. They were fifth cousins.

On 19th March 1556 [his wife] Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham [aged 38] died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Basing.

On 25th December 1558 [his mother] Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester died.

Before 1560 [his son-in-law] Henry Cromwell 2nd Baron Cromwell Oakham [aged 21] and Mary Paulett Baroness Cromwell Oakham were married. She by marriage Baroness Cromwell Oakham. She the daughter of John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 49] and Elizabeth Willoughby. They were sixth cousins.

Before May 1571 John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 61] and Winifred Brydges Marchioness Winchester were married. He the son of William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 88] and Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester.

On 10th March 1572 [his father] William Paulet 1st Marquess Winchester [aged 89] died. On His son John [aged 62] succeeded 2nd Marquess Winchester, 2nd Earl Wiltshire, 2nd Baron St John. [his wife] Winifred Brydges Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

Before 4th November 1576 [his son-in-law] Henry Ughtred [aged 43] and Elizabeth Paulett Countess Devon were married. She the daughter of John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 66] and Elizabeth Willoughby. They were sixth cousins.

On 4th November 1576 John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester [aged 66] died. His son William [aged 44] succeeded 3rd Marquess Winchester, 3rd Earl Wiltshire, 3rd Baron St John. Agnes Howard Marchioness Winchester [aged 41] by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

In 1586 [his former wife] Winifred Brydges Marchioness Winchester died.

Survey London Volume 4 Chelsea Part II. More's estate was granted to [his father] Sir William Paulet [See Patent Roll, I Edward VI., pt. 3.] (first Marquess of Winchester): it was inherited by his son the second Marquess, and in 1575 passed to Gregory Fiennes, Lord Dacre of the South, and his wife Anne - the foundress of those charming almshouses, Emmanuel Hospital, Westminster, now destroyed - who was a daughter of the Marchioness of Winchester by her former husband, Sir Robert Sackville. Baroness Dacre, who died in 1595, left the house to Lord Burleigh, who is said to have lived here, and he was followed by his youngest son, Sir Robert Cecil, afterwards Earl of Salisbury, who took possession in 1597. It is to Cecil's passion for building, which was not exhausted until he had parted with his fortune in completing Hatfield, that we owe the earliest representations on paper of the house at Chelsea. In his Chelsea Old Church Mr. Randall Davies published a reproduction of a beautiful plan of the Chelsea Estate, preserved among the Hatfield papers, and the present writer in some further research among Lord Salisbury's MSS. found five plans to a larger scale, all of which have reference to Cecil's schemes for rebuilding Sir Thomas More's house. For a detailed examination of these plans, the reader is referred to the Architectural Review of March and May, 1911, but by the courtesy of the proprietors of the Review, the reproductions are included here.

[his daughter] Elizabeth Paulett Countess Devon was born to John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester and Elizabeth Willoughby. She married (1) 28th November 1545 her fourth cousin once removed William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon and had issue (2) before 4th November 1576 her sixth cousin Henry Ughtred, son of Anthony Ughtred and Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham.

[his daughter] Mary Paulett Baroness Cromwell Oakham was born to John Paulet 2nd Marquess Winchester and Elizabeth Willoughby. She married before 1560 her sixth cousin Henry Cromwell 2nd Baron Cromwell Oakham, son of Gregory Cromwell 1st Baron Cromwell Oakham and Elizabeth Seymour Baroness Cromwell Oakham, and had issue.
