Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall
The Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall (Chronicon Anglicanum) is an indispensable medieval history that brings to life centuries of English and European affairs through the eyes of a learned Cistercian monk. Ralph of Coggeshall, abbot of the Abbey of Coggeshall in Essex in the early 13th century, continued and expanded his community’s chronicle, documenting events from the Norman Conquest of 1066 into the tumultuous reign of King Henry III. Blending eyewitness testimony, careful compilation, and the monastic commitment to record-keeping, this chronicle offers a rare narrative of political intrigue, royal power struggles, and social upheaval in England and beyond. Ralph’s work captures the reigns of pivotal figures such as Richard I and King John, providing invaluable insights into their characters, decisions, and the forces that shaped medieval rule. More than a simple annal, Chronicon Anglicanum conveys the texture of medieval life and governance, making it a rich source for scholars and readers fascinated by English history, monastic authorship, and the shaping of the medieval world.

Wiltshire Archaeological Magazine 1857 V4 Pages 307-363. The first person who examined it with attention was John Aubrey, whose memory will long be preserved by his graphic description of persons and things connected with his native county, Wiltshire. As he was only in his 23rd year when he made his discovery of Abury, and as the work in which he has preserved his early reminiscences of it (the "Monumenta Britannica" now in the Bodleian Library), though often partially quoted by various writers, has never yet been fully published; it may not be amiss to take the present opportunity of presenting to the reader the entire passages relating to this place1:—
"I was inclin'd by my Genius from my childhood to the love of antiquities: and my Fate dropt me in a countrey most suitable for such enquiries.
"Salisbury-plaines, and Stonehenge I had known from eight years old: but, I never saw the Countrey about Marleboruogh, till Christmas 1648: being then invited to the Lord Francis Seymour's, by the Honorable Mr. Charles Seymour2, with whom I had the honor to be intimately acquainted, and whose Friendship I ought to mention with a profound respect to his memorie.
