Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. On 4th May 1880 George Milles 1st Earl Sondes [aged 55] was created 1st Earl Sondes, 1st Viscount Throwley.
On 1st October 1885 [his son-in-law] Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Gore [aged 30] and Constance Grace Milles [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of George Milles 1st Earl Sondes [aged 60] and Charlote Stracey.
On 8th July 1887 [his brother-in-law] Edward Fellowes 1st Baron de Ramsey of Ramsey Abbey [aged 78] was created 1st Baron Ramsey of Ramsey Abbey in Huntingdonshire. He died a month later. [his sister] Mary Julia Milles Baroness de Ramsay by marriage Baroness Ramsey of Ramsey Abbey in Huntingdonshire.
On 10th September 1894 George Milles 1st Earl Sondes [aged 69] died. His son George [aged 33] succeeded 2nd Earl Sondes, 2nd Viscount Throwley, 6th Baron Sondes.
