Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

She the daughter of [her grandfather] Rudolph "Pious" II King Burgundy II King Italy and [her grandmother] Bertha Swabia Queen Consort Italy. He the son of Henry "Fowler" I King East Francia and Matilda Ringelheim Queen Consort East Francia.

On 10th September 954 Louis "Overseas" IV King West Francia [aged 34] died. His son Lothair [aged 13] succeeded III King West Francia.

On 2nd February 962 Otto I Holy Roman Emperor King Italy and East Francia [aged 49] was created Holy Roman Emperor. Adelaide of Italy Holy Roman Empress [aged 31] by marriage Holy Roman Empress.

In 965 Lothair III King West Francia [aged 24] and Emma of Italy Queen of West Francia [aged 17] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort France. She the daughter of Lothair II King of Italy and Adelaide of Italy Holy Roman Empress [aged 34]. He the son of Louis "Overseas" IV King West Francia and Gerberga Queen Consort West Francia [aged 52]. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

Around 970 [her son] Otto Carolingian was born to Lothair III King West Francia [aged 29] and Emma of Italy Queen of West Francia [aged 22].

In 970 [her brother-in-law] Charles Carolingian Duke Lower Lorraine [aged 16] and Adelaide Troyes Duchess Lower Lorraine [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Duchess Lower Lorraine. She the daughter of Robert Vermandois Count Meaux Count Châlons. He the son of Louis "Overseas" IV King West Francia and [her mother-in-law] Gerberga Queen Consort West Francia. They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 973 Otto "Red" II King Germany II Holy Roman Emperor II King Italy [aged 18] succeeded II Holy Roman Emperor. Theophanu Unknown Holy Roman Empress by marriage Holy Roman Empress.

On 7th May 973 Otto I Holy Roman Emperor King Italy and East Francia [aged 60] died. His son Otto [aged 18] succeeded II King Germany.

In 977 [her brother-in-law] Charles Carolingian Duke Lower Lorraine [aged 23] was appointed Duke Lower Lorraine.

After 7th September 978 [her sister-in-law] Gerberge of Lothingaria Countess Vermandois [deceased] died.

In 982 Louis "Do Nothing" V King West Francia [aged 15] and Adelaide-Blanche of Anjou Queen Consort West Francia [aged 42] were married. The difference in their ages was 27 years; she, unusually, being older than him. She the daughter of Fulk "Good" Ingelger 2nd Count Anjou and Gerberge Unknown Viscountess Anjou. He the son of Lothair III King West Francia [aged 41] and Emma of Italy Queen of West Francia [aged 34].

On 7th December 983 Otto "Red" II King Germany II Holy Roman Emperor II King Italy [aged 28] died following a malaria outbreak. His son Otto [aged 3] succeeded III King Germany.

On 2nd March 986 Lothair III King West Francia [aged 45] died. His son Louis [aged 19] succeeded V King West Francia. Adelaide-Blanche of Anjou Queen Consort West Francia [aged 46] by marriage Queen Consort West Francia.

On 13th November 986 [her son] Otto Carolingian [aged 16] died.

After 987 Emma of Italy Queen of West Francia [deceased] died.

In 947 [her father] Lothair II King of Italy and Adelaide of Italy Holy Roman Empress were married. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Rudolph "Pious" II King Burgundy II King Italy and [her grandmother] Bertha Swabia Queen Consort Italy. They were half fourth cousins.
