This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Biography of George Crewe 8th Baronet 1795-1844

Paternal Family Tree: Harpur

In 1792 [his father] Henry Crewe 7th Baronet [aged 29] and [his mother] Anne "Nanette" Hawkins [aged 26] were married. She, a lady's maid, having been his mistress. They had had one child before their marriage.

On 1st February 1795 George Crewe 8th Baronet was born to Henry Crewe 7th Baronet [aged 32] and Anne "Nanette" Hawkins [aged 29].

In 1819 George Crewe 8th Baronet [aged 23] and Jane Whitaker Lady Crewe [aged 20] were married.

On 6th February 1819 [his father] Henry Crewe 7th Baronet [aged 56] died in a carriage accident. He was thrown from his carriage during a journey from Marylebone, London to Barham (Boreham) House, Hertfordshire. His son George [aged 24] succeeded 8th Baronet Harpur of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.

In 1821 George Crewe 8th Baronet [aged 25] was appointed High Sheriff of Derbyshire.

In 1824 [his son] John Harpur Crewe 9th Baronet was born to George Crewe 8th Baronet [aged 28] and [his wife] Jane Whitaker Lady Crewe [aged 25]. He married before 14th October 1846 Eliza Lovell Lady Harpur and had issue.

In 1827 [his mother] Anne "Nanette" Hawkins [aged 61] died.

John Harpur Crewe 9th Baronet: In 1824 he was born to George Crewe 8th Baronet and Jane Whitaker Lady Crewe. On 1st January 1844 George Crewe 8th Baronet died at Calke Abbey [Map]. His son John succeeded 9th Baronet Harpur of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. Before 14th October 1846 John Harpur Crewe 9th Baronet and Eliza Lovell Lady Harpur were married. In 1886 John Harpur Crewe 9th Baronet died. His son Vauncey succeeded 10th Baronet Harpur of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.

On 1st January 1844 George Crewe 8th Baronet [aged 48] died at Calke Abbey [Map]. His son John [aged 20] succeeded 9th Baronet Harpur of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.

In 1881 [his former wife] Jane Whitaker Lady Crewe [aged 82] died.
