Biography of William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne 1859-1942

On 2nd February 1848 [his father] Roundell Palmer 1st Earl Selborne [aged 35] and [his mother] Laura Waldegrave Countess Selborne [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Waldegrave 8th Earl Waldegrave [aged 59].

On 17th October 1859 William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne was born to [his father] Roundell Palmer 1st Earl Selborne [aged 46] and [his mother] Laura Waldegrave Countess Selborne [aged 38].

On 5th August 1874 [his brother-in-law] William Frederick Waldegrave 9th Earl Waldegrave [aged 23] and [his sister] Mary Dorothea Palmer Countess Waldegrave [aged 24] were married. She by marriage Countess Waldegrave. She the daughter of [his father] Roundell Palmer 1st Earl Selborne [aged 61] and [his mother] Laura Waldegrave Countess Selborne [aged 53]. They were half first cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 27th October 1883 William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 24] and Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 25] were married. She the daughter of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil 3rd Marquess Salisbury [aged 53] and Georgina Alderson Marchioness of Salisbury [aged 56]. He the son of Roundell Palmer 1st Earl Selborne [aged 70] and Laura Waldegrave Countess Selborne [aged 62].

Around 1885 [his daughter] Mabel Laura Georgiana Palmer Countess Grey was born to William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 25] and [his wife] Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 26]. She married 16th June 1906 Charles Robert Grey 5th Earl Grey, son of Albert Henry George Grey 4th Earl Grey and Alice Holford Countess Grey, and had issue.

On 10th April 1885 [his mother] Laura Waldegrave Countess Selborne [aged 63] died.

On 15th April 1887 [his son] Roundell Palmer 3rd Earl Selborne was born to William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 27] and [his wife] Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 29]. He married 9th June 1910 Grace Ridley Countess Selborne, daughter of Matthew White Ridley 1st Viscount Ridley, and had issue.

On 17th May 1887 [his brother-in-law] James Gascoyne-Cecil 4th Marquess Salisbury [aged 25] and Cicely Anne Gore Marchioness Salisbury [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore 5th Earl Arran [aged 48] and Edith Jocelyn. He the son of [his father-in-law] Robert Gascoyne-Cecil 3rd Marquess Salisbury [aged 57] and [his mother-in-law] Georgina Alderson Marchioness of Salisbury [aged 60].

On 4th May 1895 [his father] Roundell Palmer 1st Earl Selborne [aged 82] died. His son William [aged 35] succeeded 2nd Earl Selborne, 2nd Viscount Wolmer of Blackmoor in Hampshire, 2nd Baron Selborne of Selborne in Hampshire. [his wife] Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 37] by marriage Countess Selborne.

On 22nd August 1903 [his father-in-law] Robert Gascoyne-Cecil 3rd Marquess Salisbury [aged 73] died. Monument at St Etheldreda's Church, Hatfield [Map] by William Goscombe John [aged 43]. His son [his brother-in-law] James [aged 41] succeeded 4th Marquess Salisbury in Wiltshire, 10th Earl Salisbury. Cicely Anne Gore Marchioness Salisbury [aged 36] by marriage Marchioness Salisbury in Wiltshire. Note the St George Pendant signifying his being a Knight of the Garter.

Cicely Anne Gore Marchioness Salisbury: On 15th July 1867 she was born to Arthur Saunders Gore 5th Earl Arran and Edith Jocelyn. On 17th May 1887 James Gascoyne-Cecil 4th Marquess Salisbury and she were married. She the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore 5th Earl Arran and Edith Jocelyn. He the son of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil 3rd Marquess Salisbury and Georgina Alderson Marchioness of Salisbury. On 5th February 1955 Cicely Anne Gore Marchioness Salisbury died.

On 16th June 1906 [his son-in-law] Charles Robert Grey 5th Earl Grey [aged 26] and Mabel Laura Georgiana Palmer Countess Grey [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 46] and Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 48]. He the son of Albert Henry George Grey 4th Earl Grey [aged 54] and Alice Holford Countess Grey.

In 1909 William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 49] was invested 837th Knight of the Garter by King Edward VII of the United Kingdom [aged 67].

On 9th June 1910 Roundell Palmer 3rd Earl Selborne [aged 23] and Grace Ridley Countess Selborne [aged 21] were married. He the son of William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 50] and Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 52].

On 8th November 1933 [his sister] Mary Dorothea Palmer Countess Waldegrave [aged 83] died.

On 26th February 1942 William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne [aged 82] died. His son Roundell [aged 54] succeeded 3rd Earl Selborne, 3rd Viscount Wolmer of Blackmoor in Hampshire, 3rd Baron Selborne of Selborne in Hampshire. Grace Ridley Countess Selborne [aged 53] by marriage Countess Selborne.

On 27th April 1950 [his former wife] Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne [aged 92] died.

[his son] Robert Palmer was born to William Palmer 2nd Earl Selborne and Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil Countess Selborne.
