The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

She by marriage Countess Gloucester, Countess Hertford. The difference in their ages was 28 years. She the daughter of [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 50) and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 49). On 3rd October 1292 Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer was born to [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 49) and [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 20) at Caerphilly Castle [Map]. She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

On 7th December 1295 [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 52) died at Monmouth Castle [Map]. He buried at Tewkesbury Abbey [Map]. His son [her brother] Gilbert (age 4) succeeded 8th Earl Gloucester, 7th Earl Hertford, 8th Lord Clare, 4th Lord Glamorgan.

In January 1297 [her step-father] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) and [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 24) were married in secret greatly offending her father [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 57) who had been planning to marry her to Amadeus V "Great" Savoy (age 47) in March. Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford was imprisoned at Bristol Castle, Gloucestershire [Map]; he was released in August 1297. She the daughter of King Edward I of England and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England.

In August 1297 [her step-father] Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) was created 1st Earl Gloucester, 1st Earl Hertford. There is some uncertainty as to whether these creations existed, or were created for life only, since they do appear to have been inherited, or whether there is confusion around his having been married to [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 25), the widow of the seventh Earl of the first creation [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford.

After 1302 [her half-sister] Joan Clare Countess Fife (deceased) died.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. An arranged marriage although not clear who arranged it or whose ward Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick was (his father Guy Beauchamp 10th Earl Warwick had died four years before) - possibly by [her uncle] King Edward II of England (age 34) as a means of securing the Welsh March. The Beauchamp family established, the Mortimer family aspirational. The marriage took place after Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 31) had returned from his tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and before he rebelled against King Edward II of England in opposition to [her husband] Hugh "Younger" Despencer 1st Baron Despencer (age 33). She the daughter of Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March and Joan Geneville Baroness Mortimer 2nd Baroness Geneville (age 33). Execution of the Despencers

On 24th November 1326 [her husband] Hugh "Younger" Despencer 1st Baron Despencer (age 40) was hanged, drawn and quartered in Hereford [Map]. Baron Despencer forfeit.

Simon of Reading was also hanged, drawn and quartered the same day.

Founders and Benefactors of Tewkesbury Abbey. fol. 021r: [her former husband] Hugh II Despenser, Earl of Gloucester (d. 1326), became lord through marriage to Gilbert III's sister [Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer]. A youthful figure in a ruff, wearing a hat with the three feathers of the Prince of Wales, plate armour and a mantle over his heraldic surcoat; he holds a hawk on his unprotected left hand. He was Lord Chamberlain to King Edward of Carnarvon. Three shields.
