Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

She by marriage Queen Consort Scotland. The couple \remained in York until Jan 1252 after which they travelled to Edinburgh. She the daughter of [her grandfather] King Henry III of England [aged 44] and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Provence Queen Consort England [aged 28]. He the son of King Alexander II of Scotland and Marie Coucy [aged 33]. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

On 28th February 1261 Margaret Dunkeld Queen Consort Norway was born to [her father] King Alexander III of Scotland [aged 19] and [her mother] Margaret Queen of Scotland [aged 20]. She a granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

On 26th February 1275 [her mother] Margaret Queen of Scotland [aged 34] died at Cupar Castle, Cupar. She was buried at Dunfermline Abbey [Map].

On 9th May 1280 King Magnus VI of Norway [aged 42] died. His son [her future husband] Eric [aged 12] succeeded King Norway.

On 31st August 1281 Eric II King Norway [aged 13] and Margaret Dunkeld Queen Consort Norway [aged 20] were married at Bergen. She the daughter of King Alexander III of Scotland [aged 39] and Margaret Queen of Scotland. He the son of King Magnus VI of Norway and Queen Ingeborg of Norway [aged 37]. They were half fourth cousin once removed. She a granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

On 14th November 1282 [her brother] Alexander Dunkeld Prince Scotland [aged 18] and [her sister-in-law] Margaret Dampierre Countess Guelders [aged 10] were married. She the daughter of Guy Dampierre Count Flanders [aged 56] and Isabelle Luxemburg Countess Flanders [aged 35]. He the son of [her father] King Alexander III of Scotland [aged 41] and [her mother] Margaret Queen of Scotland. They were half third cousin once removed. He a grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King William "Conqueror" I of England.

On 9th April 1283 [her daughter] Margaret "Maid of Norway" I Queen Scotland was born to [her husband] Eric II King Norway [aged 15] and Margaret Dunkeld Queen Consort Norway [aged 22] at Tønsberg. Her mother died in childbirth and was buried at Tønsberg. She a great granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

On 15th October 1285 [her father] King Alexander III of Scotland [aged 44] and [her step-mother] Yolande of Dreux Duchess Brittany [aged 22] were married. The difference in their ages was 21 years. She the daughter of Robert Capet IV Count Dreux and Beatrice Montfort Countess Dreux [aged 36]. He the son of [her grandfather] King Alexander II of Scotland and [her grandmother] Marie Coucy. In 1293 [her former husband] Eric II King Norway [aged 25] and Isabel Bruce Queen Norway [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Queen Norway. She the daughter of Robert Bruce Earl Carrick [aged 49] and Marjorie Carrick 3rd Countess Carrick. He the son of King Magnus VI of Norway and [her former mother-in-law] Queen Ingeborg of Norway.

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.
