Compton Reade 1st Baronet 1625-1679

Paternal Family Tree: Reade

In or before 1625 [his father] Thomas Reade of Appleton [aged 17] and [his mother] Mary Cornwall [aged 18] were married.

On or before 24th January 1625 Compton Reade 1st Baronet was born to Thomas Reade of Appleton [aged 18] and Mary Cornwall [aged 19]. He was baptised 24th January 1625.

In 1634 [his father] Thomas Reade of Appleton [aged 27] died.

On 1st July 1642 Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 17] matriculated Magdalen College, Oxford University.

In 1650 Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 24] and Mary Cornwall Lady Reade [aged 20] were married at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Duns Tew. They were half first cousins.

In or before 1651 [his brother-in-law] Major Thomas Cornwall 14th Baron Burford and [his sister] Anne Reade Baroness Burford were married. They were first cousins.

On 30th June 1659 [his son] Edward Reade 2nd Baronet was born to Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 34] and [his wife] Mary Cornwall Lady Reade [aged 29]. He was baptised on 6th July 1599. Coefficient of inbreeding 3.12%. He married before 25th July 1682 Elizabeth Harby Baroness Reade and had issue.

In early 1661 King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 30] rewarded of further tranche of those who supported his Restoration...

On 2nd January 1661 Henry Bedingfield 1st Baronet [aged 46] was created 1st Baronet Bedingfield of Oxburgh in Norfolk.

On 10th January 1661 Andrew Rutherford 1st Earl Teviot was created 1st Baron Rutherford with special remainder to his heirs and assignees whatsoever, and that under what provisions, restrictions, and conditions the said Lord Rutherford should think fit.

On 23rd January 1661 John Cole 1st Baronet [aged 41] was created Baronet Cole of Newland.

On 23rd February 1661 Edward Smythe 1st Baronet [aged 41] was created 1st Baronet Smythe.

On 4th March 1661 Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 36] was created 1st Baronet Reade of Barton in Berkshire. [his wife] Mary Cornwall Lady Reade [aged 31] by marriage Lady Reade of Barton in Berkshire.

On 10th March 1661 Brian Broughton 1st Baronet [aged 42] was created 1st Baronet Broughton of Broughton in Staffordshire.

On 20th March 1661 Thomas Rich 1st Baronet [aged 60] was created 1st Baronet Rich of Sonning in Berkshire.

On 29th March 1661 Robert Cholmondeley 1st Viscount Cholmondeley [aged 21] was created 1st Viscount Cholmondeley of Kells in County Meath.

On 30th March 1661 James Butler 1st Duke Ormonde [aged 50] was created 1st Duke Ormonde by King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. Elizabeth Preston Duchess Ormonde [aged 45] by marriage Duchess Ormonde.

On 30th March 1661 John Fettiplace 1st Baronet [aged 35] was created 1st Baronet Fettiplace of Childrey in Berkshire. Anne Wenman Lady Fettiplace [aged 31] by marriage Lady Fettiplace of Childrey in Berkshire.

On 17th November 1663 Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 38] purchased the estate of Shipton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire.

In 1665 [his mother] Mary Cornwall [aged 59] died.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

In 1671 [his uncle] Gilbert Cornwall 13th Baron Burford [aged 73] died. His son [his brother-in-law] Thomas succeeded 14th Baron Burford of Burford in Shropshire. [his sister] Anne Reade Baroness Burford by marriage Baroness Burford of Burford in Shropshire.

On 29th September 1679 Compton Reade 1st Baronet [aged 54] died. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Shipton-under-Wychwood. His son Edward [aged 20] succeeded 2nd Baronet Reade of Barton in Berkshire.

On 26th April 1703 [his former wife] Mary Cornwall Lady Reade [aged 73] died. She was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Shipton-under-Wychwood.
