Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 5th January 1657 [his father] Henry Vernon of Farnham Surrey [aged 69] died.
On 13th December 1660 Thomas Vernon [aged 29] and Anne Weston [aged 20] were married. The had six sons and nine daughters.
In 1661 Thomas Vernon [aged 29] was elected Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers.
Around 1663 [his daughter] Catherine Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 31] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 23]. She married in or after 1682 her fourth cousin once removed George Vernon and had issue.
In 1670 [his daughter] Arabella Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 38] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 30]. She married 17th February 1700 James Rushout 2nd Baronet, son of James Rushout 1st Baronet and Alice Pitt Lady Rushout, and had issue.
In or before 1681 [his son] Henry Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 49] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 40]. He died in Turkey unmarried.
In 1682 [his son] Thomas Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 50] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 42]. He married before 22nd August 1726 Jane Stile.
In or after 1682 George Vernon [aged 47] and [his daughter] Catherine Vernon [aged 19] were married. The difference in their ages was 28 years. They were fourth cousin once removed.
Around 1683 [his son] Charles Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 51] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 43]. He married Anne daughter of George Vernon of Farnham in Surrey.
In 1685 Thomas Vernon [aged 53] was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers.
In 1690 Thomas Vernon [aged 58] was elected MP London.

Around 1696 [his daughter] Elizabeth Vernon Viscountess Harcourt was born to Thomas Vernon [aged 64] and [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 56]. She married 1. in or before 1722 John Walter 3rd Baronet, son of William Walter 2nd Baronet and Mary Tufton 2. 30th September 1724 Simon Harcourt 1st Viscount Harcourt.
Before 1699 [his son-in-law] Stephen Waller of Beaconsfield [aged 44] and [his daughter] Judith Vernon were married.
On 17th February 1700 [his son-in-law] James Rushout 2nd Baronet [aged 24] and [his daughter] Arabella Vernon [aged 30] were married.
On 24th February 1702 [his wife] Anne Weston [aged 62] died.
In 1705 [his daughter] Arabella Vernon [aged 35] died.
On 21st October 1710 [his daughter] Catherine Vernon [aged 47] died.
On 10th February 1711 Thomas Vernon [aged 79] died.
[his daughter] Jane Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She married Gilbert Reppington of Imington in Warwickshire.
[his son] Charles Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. He died young.
[his son] George Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. He married 1. Sarah Buckley 2. his fifth cousin Dorothy Vernon.
[his daughter] Judith Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She married 1. before 1699 Stephen Waller of Beaconsfield and had issue 2. on or after 25th April 1713 John Aislabie of Studley Royal.
[his daughter] Martha Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She died unmarried.
[his daughter] Mary Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She married John Newton of King's Bromley in Staffordshire.
[his daughter] Anne Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She married Thomas Wright of Longston in Derbyshire.
[his son] John Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. He died young.
[his daughter] Matilda Vernon was born to Thomas Vernon and Anne Weston. She married 1. Anthony Balam of London 2. before 30th November 1712 Henry Furnese 1st Baronet.
