On 25th June 1674 John Maitland 1st Duke Lauderdale [aged 58] was created 1st Earl Guildford, 1st Baron Petersham. Elizabeth Murray Duchess Lauderdale [aged 47] by marriage Countess Guildford.

On 24th August 1682 John Maitland 1st Duke Lauderdale [aged 66] died. Duke Lauderdale, Earl Guildford, Baron Petersham extinct. His brother Charles succeeded 3rd Earl Lauderdale, 3rd Viscount Maitland, 3rd Viscount Lauderdale.

On 4th August 1790 Francis North 1st Earl Guildford [aged 86] died. His son Frederick [aged 58] succeeded 2nd Earl Guildford, 8th Baron North, 4th Baron Guildford. Anne Speke Countess Guilford [aged 50] by marriage Countess Guildford.

On 5th August 1792 Frederick North 2nd Earl Guildford [aged 60] died. His son George [aged 34] succeeded 3rd Earl Guildford, 9th Baron North, 5th Baron Guildford. Maria Frances Hobart Countess Guilford [aged 30] by marriage Countess Guildford.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 28th February 1796 George Augustus North 3rd Earl Guildford [aged 38] and Susan Coutts Countess Guildford [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Countess Guildford. He the son of Frederick North 2nd Earl Guildford and Anne Speke Countess Guilford [aged 56].

On 20th April 1802 George Augustus North 3rd Earl Guildford [aged 44] died. His brother Francis [aged 40] succeeded 4th Earl Guildford, 6th Baron Guildford. Baron North abeyant between his three daughters Maria North Marchioness Bute, Susan North 10th Baroness North [aged 5] and Georgiana North.

On 11th January 1817 Francis North 4th Earl Guildford [aged 55] died. His brother Frederick [aged 50] succeeded 5th Earl Guildford, 7th Baron Guildford.

On 14th October 1827 Frederick North 5th Earl Guildford [aged 61] died unmarried. His half first cousin Francis [aged 54] succeeded 6th Earl Guildford, 8th Baron Guildford.

On 29th January 1861 Francis North 6th Earl Guildford [aged 88] died. His grandson Dudley [aged 9] succeeded 7th Earl Guildford, 9th Baron Guildford.

On 19th December 1885 Dudley Francis North 7th Earl Guildford [aged 34] died. His son Frederick [aged 9] succeeded 8th Earl Guildford, 10th Baron Guildford.

On 9th November 1949 Frederick George North 8th Earl Guildford [aged 72] died. His grandson Edward [aged 16] succeeded 9th Earl Guildford, 11th Baron Guildford.

On 26th March 1999 Edward Francis North 9th Earl Guildford [aged 65] died. His son Piers [aged 28] succeeded 10th Earl Guildford, 12th Baron Guildford.
