Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche 1080-1144

Around 1080 Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche was born to Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche and Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche.

In 1080 [his grandfather] Rotrou Chateaudun II Count Perche died. His son [his father] Geoffrey succeeded III Count Perche. [his mother] Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche by marriage Countess Perche.

Before 1100 [his brother-in-law] Henry Beaumont 1st Earl Warwick [aged 49] and [his sister] Marguerite Chateaudun Countess Warwick were married. She by marriage Countess Warwick. She the daughter of [his father] Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche and [his mother] Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche.

In October 1100 [his father] Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche died. His son Routrou [aged 20] succeeded III Count Perche.

Before 1120 Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche [aged 39] and Matilda Fitzroy Countess Perche were married. She by marriage Countess Perche. She the illegitmate daughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England [aged 51]. He the son of Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche and Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche.

Around August 1120 [his brother-in-law] William Adelin Duke Normandy [aged 16] was appointed Duke Normandy.

On 25th November 1120 the White Ship left Barfleur in north-west Normandy, with a party of young Normans. [his father-in-law] King Henry I "Beauclerc" England [aged 52] had left earlier on another ship. A mile out the White Ship foundered on a submerged rock. [his brother-in-law] William Adelin Duke Normandy [aged 17], his half-siblings [his illegitimate brother-in-law] Richard Fitzroy [aged 19] and [his wife] Matilda Fitzroy Countess Perche, William Bigod [aged 27], Lucia Mahaut Blois Countess Chester, brothers Geoffrey Aigle and Engenulf Aigle, half-brothers Richard Avranches 2nd Earl Chester [aged 26] and Ottiwel Avranches, brothers Ivo Grandesmil and William Grandesmil and Geoffrey Ridel were all drowned.

Around 1129 [his mother] Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche died.

Before 1135 Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche [aged 54] and Hawise Salisbury Countess Dreux [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Countess Perche. The difference in their ages was 38 years. He the son of Geoffrey Chateaudun II Count Mortain III Count Perche and Beatrix de Ramerupt Montdidier Countess Mortain and Perche.

In 1135 [his son] Routrou Chateaudun IV Count Perche was born to Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche [aged 55] and [his wife] Hawise Salisbury Countess Dreux [aged 17]. He married Matilda Blois Countess Perche, daughter of Theobald Blois II Count Champagne IV Count Blois and Matilda Carinthia Countess Champagne and Blois, and had issue.

The Ecclesiastical History of England and Normandy by Orderic Vitalis. Lastly, this catholic prince besought all persons to preserve peace and protect the poor. Then, after having made his confession, he received penance and absolution from the priests, and receiving extreme unction, and being strengthened by the holy eucharist, commended himself to God, and departed this life on the calends of December [1st December [1135]], being Sunday, early in the night. There were then assembled five counts, [his illegitimate brother-in-law] Robert of Gloucester [aged 36], William de Warrenne, Rotrou of Mortain [aged 55], Waleran of Mellent [aged 31], and Robert of Leicester [aged 31],1 besides several other lords, captains, and noble castellans: all of whom were entreated by Hugh the archbishop, and Ouen, bishop of Evreux, not to forsake their master's corpse unless by common consent, but to conduct it to the sea side, all together, in an honourable escort.

In 1137 [his son] Archbishop Stephen of Chateaudun was born to Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche [aged 57] and [his wife] Hawise Salisbury Countess Dreux [aged 19].

Around 1141 [his brother-in-law] Patrick of Salisbury 1st Earl Salisbury [aged 19] was created 1st Earl Salisbury.

On 6th May 1144 Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche [aged 64] died. His son Routrou [aged 9] succeeded IV Count Perche.

In 1145 Robert "Great" Capet I Count Dreux [aged 22] and [his former wife] Hawise Salisbury Countess Dreux [aged 27] were married. She by marriage Countess Dreux. He the son of Louis VI King of the Franks and Adelaide Savoy Queen Consort France.

On 13th January 1151 [his former wife] Hawise Salisbury Countess Dreux [aged 33] died.

[his son] Bertrand Chateaudun was born to Routrou "The Great" Chateaudun III Count Perche.

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.
