The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

On 12th August 1315 Guy Beauchamp 10th Earl Warwick [aged 43] died. Possibly poisoned - see Thomas Walsingham. He was buried at Bordesley Abbey, Worcestershire [Map]. His succeeded son Thomas [aged 2] succeeded 11th Earl Warwick. Given his young age Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick became a ward of King Edward II of England [aged 31] until 1326.
On 19th April 1319 Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick [aged 6] and Katherine Mortimer Countess Warwick [aged 5] were married. Katherine Mortimer Countess Warwick by marriage Countess Warwick. An arranged marriage although not clear who arranged it or whose ward Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick was (his father Guy Beauchamp 10th Earl Warwick had died four years before) - possibly by King Edward II of England [aged 34] as a means of securing the Welsh March. The Beauchamp family established, the Mortimer family aspirational. The marriage took place after Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March [aged 31] had returned from his tenure as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and before he rebelled against King Edward II of England in opposition to Hugh "Younger" Despencer 1st Baron Despencer [aged 33]. She the daughter of Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March and Joan Geneville Baroness Mortimer 2nd Baroness Geneville [aged 33]. He the son of Guy Beauchamp 10th Earl Warwick and Alice Tosny Countess Warwick [aged 34]. They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King John of England.

They were third cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
On 30th April 1439 Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick [aged 57] died at Rouen, France [Map]. His succeeded son Henry [aged 14] succeeded 14th Earl Warwick. Cecily Neville Duchess Warwick [aged 15] by marriage Countess Warwick.
In the middle of the Beauchamp Chapel [Map] lieth upon a tomb of marble, in full statue, the effigy of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, in armour, all made of fine latten brass, doubly guilt.
Besides these there stand round about, his tomb, eighteen lesser images, made of brass and gilt, resembling angels, with this label: Glory and for Praise to God - Mercy to the Dead.
The Inscription about his tomb, engraved in brass, in the uncouth diction and spelling, is as follows:
Preith devoutly for the Sowel whom God assoile of one of the moost worshipful Knightes, in his Dayles of Monhode and Conning. Richard Beauchamp, late Earl of Warrewyk. Lord Despenser of Bergevenny, of mony other grete Lordships; whose Body resteth here under this Tumbe in a ful seire voute of Stone set on the bare rooch, the which visited with longe sikness in the Castel of Roan therinne deceased full cristenty the last day of April, the yer of our Lord God MCCCCXXXIX. He being at that time lieutenant, genal and goverin of the Roialmes of Fraunce, and of the Duchie of Normandie by sufficient authorite of oure Sovaigne Lord the King Harry the sixth, the which body with grete deliberacon and ful worshipful Conduit by see and by lond was brought to Warrewik the iiii day of October the yer aboveseide and was leide with ful solemne exequies in a feir Chest made of Stone in this Church, afore the west dore of this Chapel according to his last Wille and Testament therein to reste, til this Chapel by him devised in his lief were made. At the whuche Chapel founded on the rooche and alle the Membres thereof, his Executors dede fully make and apparaille, by the autorite of his said wille & Testament, and thereafter by the same autorite then dide translate ful worshipfully the seide body into the vout abouesaide; honired be God therefore.
At his head there is a great helm with a crest of a swan with a Coronet around its neck.
At his right foot a muzzled bear which features on the Beauchamp Bear and Ragged Staff badge.
At his left foot a griffin.
Over the said monument is a hearse of brass, gilt, made designedly to support a covering over the curious repository of the remains of this once great Earl.
Round about his tomb, stand fourteen images of brass, all gilt; under the feet of each of them is a coat of arms. These images are resembling fourteen lords and ladies, called weepers.

On 14th February 1444 Anne Beauchamp 15th Countess Warwick was born to Henry Beauchamp 1st Duke Warwick [aged 18] and Cecily Neville Duchess Warwick [aged 20] at Cardiff. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
Baron Burghesh, and the representation of the three Despencers Baronies abeyant between her cousin George Neville 5th and 3rd Baron Abergavenny and her aunt Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 17].
Her subsequent death aged four (her father died when she was aged three) resulted in Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury [aged 15] unexpectedly becoming Earl of Warwick by marriage ie by right of his wife Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick who was Anne Beauchamp 15th Countess Warwick. She died aged five in 1449.
On 11th June 1446 Henry Beauchamp 1st Duke Warwick [aged 21] died at Hanley Castle, Worcestershire. Duke Warwick extinct. His succeeded daughter Anne Beauchamp 15th Countess Warwick [aged 2] succeeded 15th Countess Warwick, 7th Baroness Burghesh.
On 3rd June 1449 Anne Beauchamp 15th Countess Warwick [aged 5] died at Ewelme, Oxfordshire aged four whilst in the care of Alice Chaucer Duchess Suffolk [aged 45]. She was buried at Reading Abbey, Berkshire [Map]. Baron Burghesh abeyant between her three-half aunts and her full aunt Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 22]. It isn't clear why the barony was not subject to the same legal dispute that the Earldom of Warwick was subject to - see following.
After a prolonged legal dispute between her three half-aunts, Margaret Beauchamp Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 45], Eleanor Beauchamp Duchess Somerset [aged 40], Elizabeth Beauchamp Baroness Latimer [aged 32] and her full aunt Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick, the courts decided her full aunt Anne Beauchamp should succeed. Anne Beauchamp succeeded 16th Countess Warwick. Her husband Richard Neville [aged 20] by marriage Earl Warwick; the first step on his journey to becoming Kingmaker.
The decision of the court was not subscribed to by Edmund Beaufort Earl Somerset [aged 43] who was married to Anne's half-sister Eleanor; he wanted his share of the considerable Beauchamp inheritance.

To the right worshipful and discreet Commons of this present Parliament.
Sheweth unto your wisdoms and discretions the king's true liege woman, Anne countess of Warwick, which never offended his most redoubted highness; for she, immediately after the death of her lord and husband [aged 17] - on whose soul God have mercy - for none offence by her done, but dreading only trouble, being that time within this realm, entered into the sanctuary of Beaulieu [Map] for surety of her person, to dispose for the weal and health of the soul of her said lord and husband, as right and conscience required her so to do; making within five days, or near thereabouts, after her entry into the said sanctuary, her labours, suits, and means to the king's highness for her safeguard, to be had as diligently and effectually as her power would extend. She not ceasing, but after her power continiling in such labours, suits, and means, insomuch that, in absence of clerks, she hath written letters in that behalf to the king's highness with her own hand, and not only making such labours, suits, and means to the king's highness, soothly also to the queen's [aged 34] good grace, to my right redoubted lady the king's mother, to my lady the king's eldest daughter, to my lords the king's brethren, to my ladies the king's sisters, to my lady of Bedford [aged 56], mother to the queen, and to other ladies noble of this realm; in which labours, suits, and means, she hath continued hitherto, and so will continue, as she owes to do, till it may please the king, of his most good and noble grace, to have consideration that, during the life of her said lord and husband, she was covert baron, which point she remits to your great wisdoms, and that after his decease, all the time of her being in the said sainctuary, she hath duly kept her fidelity and liegeance, and obeyed the king's commandments. Howbeity it hath pleased the king's highness, by some sinister information to his said highness made, to direct his most dread letters to the abbot of the monastery of Beaulieu, with right sharp commandment that such persons as his highness sent to the said monastery should have guard and strait keeping of her person, which was and is to her great heart's grievance, she specially fearing that the privileges and liberties of the church, by such keeping of her person, might be interrupted and violated, where the privileges of the said sanctuary were never so largely attempted unto this time, as is said; yet the said Anne and Countess, under protestations by her made, hath suffered strait keeping of her person and yet doth, that her fidelity and liegeance to the king's highness the better might be understood, hoping she might the rather have had largess to make suits to the king's highness in her own person for her livelihood and rightful inheritance, which livelihood and inheritance, with all revenues and profits thereto pertaining, with her jointure also, and dower of the earldom of Salisbury, fully and wholly hath been restrained from her, from the time of the death of her said lord and husband unto this day. And forasmuch as our sovereign lord the king of his great grace hath set and assembled his high court of Parliament for reformations, right, and equity to all his subjects and liege people duly to be ministered, the said Anne and Countess humbly beseecheth your great wisdom to ponder and weigh in your consciences her right and true title of her inheritance, as the earldom of Warwick and Spencer's lands, to which she is rightfully born by lineal succession, and also her jointure and dower of the earldom of Salisbury aforesaid. And to shew her your benevolence, that by the king's good grace and authority of this his noble Parliament she may to her foresaid livelihood and rightful inheritance duly be restored and it enjoy, as the laws of Almighty God and of this noble realm, right, also, and conscience doth require; beseeching heartily your great goodnesses, in the reverence of Almighty God and of his most blessed mother, will of grace to consider the poor estate she stands in, how in her own person she may not solicit the premises as she would, an she might, nor is of power any sufficient solicitor in this behalf to make; and though she might, as (she; may not, there is none that dare take it upon him; to have also this poor bill in your tender remembrance, that your perfect charity and good will may solicit the eflFect of the same, which to do, her power at this time may not extend. On 20th September 1492 Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess Warwick [aged 66] died. Arguably, Her succeeded grandson Edward [aged 17] succeeded 17th Earl Warwick. His succession was unaffected by his father's attainder since the Earldom was held by his mother.
Her two daughters Isabel Neville Duchess Clarence and Anne Neville Queen Consort England had both predeceased her. Her remaining descendants were Isabel's children Margaret [aged 19] and Edward.
The succession is further complicated by Ann Beauchamp having been declared legally dead in 1471 at which time the Earldom was, arguably, abeyant between her two daughters.
Both Margaret and Edward were executed by the Tudors, in 1541 and 1499, respectively.
On 28th November 1499 Edward "Last Plantagenet" York 17th Earl Warwick [aged 24] was executed at Tower Hill [Map]. Earl Warwick, Baron Montagu, Baron Montagu, Baron Monthermer forfeit.
Documentation held in Spain apparently describes Catherine of Aragon's [aged 13] parents Ferdinand II King Aragon [aged 47] and Isabella Queen Castile [aged 48] expressing concern that Edward "Last Plantagenet" York 17th Earl Warwick was a potential claimant to throne, and being reluctant for their daughter to marry Arthur Prince of Wales [aged 13] whilst there was a threat to his accession causing King Henry VII of England and Ireland [aged 42] to use Perkin Warbreck's [deceased] attempted escape with Edward "Last Plantagenet" York 17th Earl Warwick as a means to an end.

Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes

To either side are pelleted Pilasters supporting an entablature with scrolled Cartouche of arms and flanked by heraldic supporters. The whole is painted and gilded and beneath is a panel containing an inscribed poem. Above his Arms implaled with hers. His are quartered 1&4

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.
