Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On or before 1st May 1679, the day he was buried at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map], George Vane of Long Newton [aged 61] died.

George Vane of Long Newton: In 1618 he was born to Henry Vane "The Elder" and Frances Darcy. On 27th March 1640 he and Elizabeth Maddison were married. They had thirteen children.

On 25th October 1684 Elizabeth Maddison [aged 66] died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

Elizabeth Maddison: In October 1618 she was born to Lyonell Maddison.

On 25th July 1750 George Vane of Long Newton [aged 65] died. Memorial at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

George Vane of Long Newton: In 1685 he was born to Lionel Vane and Catherine Fletcher. In or before 1728 he and Ann Machon were married. The had fours sons and four daughters.

On 7th June 1794 Henry Vane 1st Baronet [aged 66] died. His son Henry [aged 23] succeeded 2nd Baronet Vane of Long Newton in County Durham. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

Henry Vane 1st Baronet: In 1728 he was born to George Vane of Long Newton and Ann Machon. Before 1771 he and Frances Tempest were married at St Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside [Map]. On 13th July 1782 Henry Vane 1st Baronet was created 1st Baronet Vane of Long Newton in County Durham.

On 19th January 1795 Frances Tempest [aged 54] died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

Frances Tempest: In 1741 she was born to John Tempest of Sherburne Durham and Frances Shuttleworth. Coefficient of inbreeding 3.13%.

On 11th June 1864 Adolphus Frederick Charles William Vane-Tempest [aged 38] died during a struggle with four of his keepers having been previously been diagnosed with madness. Memorial at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

Adolphus Frederick Charles William Vane-Tempest: On 2nd July 1825 he was born to Charles William Vane 3rd Marquess Londonderry and Frances Vane Tempest Marchioness Londonderry. In December 1852 Adolphus Frederick Charles William Vane-Tempest was elected MP Durham but the election was overturned on petition the following year. On 23rd April 1860 he and Susan Charlotte Catherine Pelham-Clinton were married. She the daughter of Henry Pelham-Clinton 5th Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne and Susan Harriet Catherine Hamilton Duchess Newcastle under Lyne. He the son of Charles William Vane 3rd Marquess Londonderry and Frances Vane Tempest Marchioness Londonderry.

On 6th September 1875 Susan Charlotte Catherine Pelham-Clinton [aged 36] died. Memorial at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].

Susan Charlotte Catherine Pelham-Clinton: On 7th April 1839 she was born to Henry Pelham-Clinton 5th Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne and Susan Harriet Catherine Hamilton Duchess Newcastle under Lyne. After 11th June 1864 Susan Charlotte Catherine Pelham-Clinton became the mistress of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. She is believed by some to have had a child with the Prince although evidence is scant.

On 8th February 1915 Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest-Stewart 6th Marquess Londonderry [aged 62] died. His son Charles [aged 36] succeeded 7th Marquess Londonderry. Memorial at St Mary's Church, Long Newton [Map].
