Biography of Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey 1194-1248

In August 1189 [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke (age 43) and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke (age 17) were married at Temple Church, London [Map]. The title Earl Pembroke (1C 1138) was not included in the settlement since it had been rescinded as a consequence of Isabel's father having supported King Stephen. The difference in their ages was 26 years. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Richard "Strongbow" Clare 2nd Earl Pembroke and [her grandmother] Aoife ni Diarmait Macmurrough Countess Pembroke and Buckingham.

In 1194 Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey was born to William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke (age 48) and Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke (age 22).

In 1199 [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke (age 53) was created 1st Earl Pembroke.

On 7th May 1202 Hamelin Warenne Earl of Surrey (age 73) died. His son [her future husband] William succeeded 5th Earl Surrey and inherited his estates including Conisbrough Castle [Map]. He undertook further building work including the Great Hall and service buildings in the Inner Bailey. Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 8) by marriage Countess Surrey.

In 1204 [her future husband] William Warenne 5th Earl of Surrey was appointed Warden of the Cinque Ports.

Around December 1206 Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 24) and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 12) were married. She the daughter of William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke (age 60) and Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke (age 34). He the son of Roger Bigod 2nd Earl Norfolk (age 62) and Ida Tosny Countess Norfolk (age 50). They were third cousins.

After 1208 [her brother] Anselm Marshal 6th Earl Pembroke and [her sister-in-law] Maud Bohun Countess Pembroke and Winchester were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. She the daughter of Humphrey Bohun 2nd Earl Hereford 1st Earl Essex (age 4) and Matilda Lusignan Countess Hereford and Essex. Around 1209 Roger Bigod 4th Earl Norfolk was born to [her husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 27) and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 15). He married May 1225 his half second cousin twice removed Isabella Dunkeld Countess Norfolk, daughter of King William I of Scotland and Ermengarde Beaumont Sarthe Queen Consort Scotland.

Around 1211 Hugh Bigod Justicar was born to [her husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 29) and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 17). He married 1243 Joan Stuteville and had issue.

Around 1212 Isabel Bigod was born to [her husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 30) and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 18). She married (1) before 1230 her third cousin once removed Gilbert Lacy and had issue (2) before 1238 her third cousin once removed John Fitzgeoffrey, son of Geoffrey Fitzpeter 1st Earl Essex and Aveline Clare Countess Essex, and had issue.

In September 1214 [her brother] William "The Younger" Marshal 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 24) and [her sister-in-law] Alice Béthune Countess Pembroke were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. She the daughter of Baldwin Béthune Count Aumale and Hawise Blois 2nd Countess Albemarle and Essex. He the son of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke (age 68) and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke (age 42).

Around 1215 Ralph Bigod was born to [her husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 33) and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 21). He married his half fourth cousin once removed Bertha Ferrers, daughter of William Ferrers 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes Gernon Countess Derby.

In or before 1218 [her brother-in-law] Gilbert Clare 5th Earl Gloucester 4th Earl Hertford (age 37) and [her sister] Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess Gloucester, Countess Hertford. The difference in their ages was 20 years. In 1220 [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke (age 48) died. She was buried in the choir of Tintern Abbey [Map].

In 1221 [her father-in-law] Roger Bigod 2nd Earl Norfolk (age 77) died. His son [her husband] Hugh (age 39) succeeded 3rd Earl Norfolk. Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 27) by marriage Countess Norfolk.

Around 1222 [her brother] Richard Marshal 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 31) and [her sister-in-law] Gervase Dinant Countess Pembroke were married. He the son of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke.

On 23rd April 1224 [her brother] William "The Younger" Marshal 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 34) and [her sister-in-law] Eleanor Plantagenet Countess Pembroke and Leicester (age 9) were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of King John of England and Isabella of Angoulême Queen Consort England (age 36). He the son of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. They were fifth cousins.

On 18th February 1225 [her husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk (age 43) died. His son [her son] Roger (age 16) succeeded 4th Earl Norfolk.

Around May 1225 [her son] Roger Bigod 4th Earl Norfolk (age 16) and [her daughter-in-law] Isabella Dunkeld Countess Norfolk (age 30) were married. She by marriage Countess Norfolk. They were half second cousin once removed.

In 1228 Isabel Plantagenet Countess Lincoln and Arundel was born to [her husband] William Warenne 5th Earl of Surrey and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 34). She married before 7th May 1243 her fourth cousin once removed Hugh D'Aubigny 5th Earl Lincoln 5th Earl of Arundel, son of William D'Aubigny 3rd Earl Lincoln 3rd Earl of Arundel and Mabel Gernon Countess Lincoln and Arundel.

He married 1247 his fifth cousin Alice Lusignan Countess of Surrey, daughter of Hugh X of Lusignan V Count La Marche and Isabella of Angoulême Queen Consort England, and had issue.

On 30th March 1231 [her brother-in-law] Richard of Cornwall 1st Earl Cornwall (age 22) and [her sister] Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford (age 30) were married at Fawley, Lambourn. She by marriage Countess Cornwall. She the daughter of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. He the son of King John of England and Isabella of Angoulême Queen Consort England (age 43). They were fifth cousins.

On 6th April 1231 [her brother] William "The Younger" Marshal 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 41) died. His brother [her brother] Richard (age 40) succeeded 3rd Earl Pembroke. [her sister-in-law] Gervase Dinant Countess Pembroke by marriage Countess Pembroke.

On 16th April 1234 [her brother] Richard Marshal 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 43) died from wounds at Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny. His brother [her brother] Gilbert (age 37) succeeded 4th Earl Pembroke.

On 1st August 1235 [her brother] Gilbert Marshal 4th Earl Pembroke (age 38) and [her sister-in-law] Marjorie Dunkeld Countess Pembroke (age 35) were married at Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland [Map]. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. She the daughter of King William I of Scotland and Ermengarde Beaumont Sarthe Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

Before 1238 [her son-in-law] John Fitzgeoffrey (age 32) and [her daughter] Isabel Bigod (age 25) were married. She the daughter of [her former husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 43). He the son of Geoffrey Fitzpeter 1st Earl Essex and Aveline Clare Countess Essex. They were third cousin once removed.

On 17th January 1240 [her sister] Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford (age 39) died.

On 27th May 1240 [her husband] William Warenne 5th Earl of Surrey died. His son [her son] John (age 9) succeeded 6th Earl Surrey and inherited his estates including Conisbrough Castle [Map].

On 27th June 1241 [her brother] Gilbert Marshal 4th Earl Pembroke (age 44) was killed in a tournament at Ware, Hertfordshire [Map]. He was buried at Temple Church, London [Map] next to his father. His brother [her brother] Walter (age 42) succeeded 5th Earl Pembroke; he had also attended the tournament. The King King Henry III of England (age 33) had expressly forbidden the tournament leading to anger at his disobeying the King's orders.

On 6th January 1242 [her brother] Walter Marshal 5th Earl Pembroke (age 43) and [her sister-in-law] Margaret Quincy 3rd Countess Lincoln and Pembroke (age 36) were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. He by marriage Earl Lincoln. A dynastic marriage that brought together the Earldom's of Pembroke and Lincoln. She the daughter of Robert Quincy Earl Lincoln and Hawise Gernon 2nd Countess Lincoln. He the son of [her father] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. In 1243 [her son] Hugh Bigod Justicar (age 32) and [her daughter-in-law] Joan Stuteville (age 27) were married. He the son of [her former husband] Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl Norfolk and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 49).

Before 7th May 1243 [her son-in-law] Hugh D'Aubigny 5th Earl Lincoln 5th Earl of Arundel and [her daughter] Isabel Plantagenet Countess Lincoln and Arundel (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [her former husband] William Warenne 5th Earl of Surrey and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 49). He the son of William D'Aubigny 3rd Earl Lincoln 3rd Earl of Arundel and Mabel Gernon Countess Lincoln and Arundel. They were fourth cousin once removed. On 27th November 1245 [her brother] Walter Marshal 5th Earl Pembroke (age 46) died at Goodrich Castle, Gloucestershire [Map]. He was buried at Tintern Abbey [Map] next to his mother [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke His brother [her brother] Anselm (age 37) succeeded 6th Earl Pembroke although he only enjoyed the title for one month dying on 23rd December 1245.

On 23rd December 1245 [her brother] Anselm Marshal 6th Earl Pembroke (age 37) died at Chepstow Castle [Map]. He was buried at Tintern Abbey [Map] next to his brother [her brother] Walter Marshal 5th Earl Pembroke (deceased), who had died only a month before, and mother [her mother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. Earl Pembroke extinct.

In 1247 [her son] John Warenne 6th Earl of Surrey (age 16) and [her daughter-in-law] Alice Lusignan Countess of Surrey (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Surrey. She the daughter of Hugh X of Lusignan V Count La Marche (age 64) and Isabella of Angoulême Queen Consort England. He the son of [her former husband] William Warenne 5th Earl of Surrey and Maud Marshal Countess Norfolk and Surrey (age 53). They were fifth cousins.
