Death of Charles IV of France Sucession of Philip VI

On 1st February 1328 Charles IV King France I King Navarre (age 33) died. On 1st April 1328 His first cousin [his father] Philip (age 34) succeeded VI King France: Capet Valois. The succession somewhat complicated by Charles' wife Blanche of Burgundy Queen Consort France being pregnant. The child Blanche Capet was born two months later on 1st April 1328. A girl child therefore excluded from the succession confirming Philip's as King. Charles the last of the House of Capet. Philip the first of the House of Valois. His niece Joan (age 16) succeeded II Queen Navarre. Her husband Philip "Noble" III King Navarre (age 21) by marriage III King Navarre.

On 29th May 1328 [his father] King Philip "Fortunate" VI of France (age 34) was crowned VI King France: Capet Valois at Rheims Cathedral [Map].

He married 19th June 1369 his half third cousin Margaret Dampierre Duchess Burgundy, daughter of Louis Dampierre III Count Nevers II Count Flanders and Margaret Brabant Countess Nevers and Flanders, and had issue.

On 24th June 1343 [his daughter] Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre was born to King John "The Good" II of France (age 24) and [his wife] Bonne Luxemburg Queen Consort France (age 28). Black Death Plague

In June 1348 the Black Death Plague arrived in England. The first of many occurrences. It is estimated to have killed between 25 to 60 percent of the population of around six million. The outbreak lasted through 1349 recurring in 1362, 1369 and regularly thereafter until its last significant outbreak in The Great Plague of 1666.

The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Battle of Poitiers

On 19th September 1356 the army of Edward "Black Prince" (age 26) defeated the French and Scottish army led by King John "The Good" II of France (age 37) at the Battle of Poitiers

John Savile of Shelley and Golcar (age 31) probably fought having received letters of protection to travel overseas.

Hugh Courtenay 2nd or 10th Earl Devon (age 53) protected the baggage train.

Treaty of Brétigny

On 8th May 1360 King Edward III of England (age 47) and King John "The Good" II of France (age 41), and their eldest sons Edward "Black Prince" (age 29) and the future [his son] King Charles V of France (age 21), ratified the Treaty of Brétigny at Calais [Map]. [his son] Louis Valois Anjou I Duke Anjou (age 20) and [his son] John Valois 1st Duke Berry (age 19) were given as hostages.

[his son] Philip "Bold" Valois II Duke Burgundy (age 18) was ransomed. The treaty confirmed lands held by King Edward III of England including Aquitaine.

King John "The Good" II of France was ransomed for three million écus being released after the payment of the first third.

Bishop William of Wykeham (age 40) was present.

The Treaty was signed on 24th October 1360 at Calais.

Release of King John II of France

On 30th June 1360 King John "The Good" II of France (age 41) left the Tower of London [Map] and proceeded to Eltham Palace, Kent [Map] where Queen Philippa (age 46) had prepared a great farewell entertainment. Passing the night at Dartford, Kent [Map], he continued towards Dover, Kent [Map], stopping at the Maison Dieu of St Mary at Ospringe, and paying homage at the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury [Map] on 4th July 1360. He dined with the Black Prince (age 30) at Dover Castle [Map], and reached English-held Calais [Map] on 8th July 1360.

On 11th September 1360 [his step-daughter] Joan Burgundy (age 16) died.

On 29th September 1360 [his wife] Joan Auvergne Queen Consort France (age 34) died. Her son [his step-son] Philip (age 14) succeeded Count Auvergne and Count Boulogne.

On 8th October 1360 [his son-in-law] Gian Galeazzo Visconti 1st Duke Milan (age 8) and [his daughter] Isabelle Valois (age 12) were married. She the daughter of King John "The Good" II of France (age 41) and [his former wife] Bonne Luxemburg Queen Consort France. They were fourth cousin once removed. Death of John II King France
