Edmund Knyvet 1508-1551

Before 1504 John Grey 2nd Viscount Lisle [aged 22] and [his mother] Muriel Howard Viscountess Lisle [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Lisle. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Howard 2nd Duke of Norfolk [aged 60] and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Tilney Countess of Surrey. They were third cousins.

Before 1508 [his father] Thomas Knyvet [aged 22] and [his mother] Muriel Howard Viscountess Lisle [aged 22] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Howard 2nd Duke of Norfolk [aged 64] and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Tilney Countess of Surrey. They were fourth cousins.

In 1508 Edmund Knyvet was born to Thomas Knyvet [aged 23] and Muriel Howard Viscountess Lisle [aged 23].

On 14th December 1511 [his mother] Muriel Howard Viscountess Lisle [aged 26] died.

In 1513 Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 29] was betrothed to [his half-sister] Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon [aged 7]. He was created 1st Viscount Lisle in recognition of the betrothal.

In May 1515 Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 31] and Mary Tudor Queen Consort France [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Duchess Suffolk. She had married Louis XII King France in Oct 1514; he had died on 01 Jan 1515. Around this time he surrendered the title Viscount Lisle which he had been created in anticipation of this marriage to [his half-sister] Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon [aged 10] which never took place. She the daughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland and Elizabeth York Queen Consort England. They were fifth cousins.

After June 1515 [his brother-in-law] Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter [aged 19] and [his half-sister] Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon [aged 10] were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. He the son of William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon and Catherine York Countess Devon [aged 35]. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a grandson of King Edward IV of England.

In 1516 Edmund Knyvet [aged 8] wardship was sold to Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 32] for £400.

In 1519 [his half-sister] Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon [aged 13] died. Her aunt Elizabeth [aged 39] succeeded 6th Baroness Lisle.

Before 1527 Edmund Knyvet [aged 18] and Anne Shelton were married. They were fifth cousins.

Around 1528 [his son] Thomas Knyvet was born to Edmund Knyvet [aged 20] and [his wife] Anne Shelton.

Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. 10th June 1541. The tenth of June, Sir Edmond Knevett [aged 33], knight, of the countie of Norfolke, was arraigned at Greenwych in the Kinges Hall for a blowe that he gave in Lent to Mr. Cleere, of Norfolke, gentleman, within the court, and was condempned to have lost his hande that he strooke with; the Kinges master cooke redie with his knife to have donne the execution, and the Serjeant of the scullerie with his malett, the irons laid in the fire to have sered him, and the Kinges Mr Surgeon with the seering cloth readie; and when the execution should have bene done the Kinge sent Mr. Long^a to stay it till after dynner, and then the officers of the household sate againe, and then the King pardoned him; and proclamation was made their, that whosoever gave any stroke heareafter in the court, or a certaine precinct therunto, should lose his hand without redemption.

Between 1547 and 1549 Henry Radclyffe 2nd Earl of Sussex [aged 40] expelled his wife Anne Calthorpe 2nd Countess Sussex [aged 26] from their home. He believed she had married Edmund Knyvet [aged 39] bigamously.

On 1st May 1551 Edmund Knyvet [aged 43] died.

[his son] Unknown Knyvet was born to Edmund Knyvet and Anne Shelton.

Frances Radclyffe was born to Henry Radclyffe 2nd Earl of Sussex and Anne Calthorpe 2nd Countess Sussex. Her father may have been Edmund Knyvet with whom her mother is believed to have commenced a bigamous marriage. She married in or before 1573 Thomas Mildmay and had issue.

Egremont Radclyffe was born to Henry Radclyffe 2nd Earl of Sussex and Anne Calthorpe 2nd Countess Sussex. His father may have been Edmund Knyvet with whom his mother is believed to have commenced a bigamous marriage.
