Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby 1555-1601

Paternal Family Tree: Bertie

On 7th September 1533 Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 49] and [his mother] Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 14] were married. She by marriage Duchess Suffolk. He held her wardship and had intended to marry her to his ten years old son. In the event of the death of his wife, Mary Tudor Queen Consort France, ten weeks earlier he decided to marry her himself instead. The difference in their ages was 35 years. They were fifth cousin once removed.

After 1551 [his father] Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby [aged 34] and [his mother] Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 31] were married. He by marriage Baron Willoughby de Eresby.

On 12th October 1555 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby was born to Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby [aged 38] and Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 36] at Wesel in Germany. He was named for his parents peregrinations through Germany avoiding religious persecution.

On 14th October 1555 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby was baptised at Church of St Willibrord, Wesel, Wesel.

On 25th December 1577 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 22] and Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby were married. She the daughter of John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding Countess of Oxford. He the son of Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby [aged 61] and Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 58].

On 19th September 1580 [his mother] Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 61] died. Her son Peregrine [aged 24] succeeded 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. [his wife] Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby by marriage Baroness Willoughby de Eresby.

She was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map] with her second husband [his father] Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby [aged 63]. Elizabethan Period. Sideboard Tomb. Cornice supported by three figures of a monk and two wildmen, each holding aloft a shield of arms. In the frieze are flowers, fruit and escutcheons.

Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby: she was born to John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding Countess of Oxford. On 25th December 1577 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby and she were married. She the daughter of John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding Countess of Oxford. He the son of Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby and Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk. Around 24th June 1624 Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby died.

On 9th April 1582 [his father] Richard Bertie Baron Willoughby [aged 65] died at Bourne. He was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map].

On 16th December 1582 [his son] Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey was born to Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 27] and [his wife] Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby. His Godmother was Queen Elizabeth I [aged 49]. He married 1605 Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey, daughter of Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Elizabeth Jeffrey, and had issue.

In 1584 [his son] Peregrine Bertie was born to Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 28] and [his wife] Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Before 27th December 1591 [his brother-in-law] Edward de Vere 17th Earl of Oxford [aged 41] and Elizabeth TrenthamCountess of Oxford were married. She by marriage Countess of Oxford. She brought her husband a dowry of £1000 bequeathed to her in her father's will, payable at the rate of 500 marks a year for three years. He the son of John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding Countess of Oxford.

Around 1595 [his daughter] Catherine Bertie was born to Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 39] and [his wife] Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby. Sources are confused about her birth year stating she was born in 1610 and that she married in 1609. Date adjusted to around 1595 on the assumption she was married around twenty years of age. Her son died at six days old on 09 Feb 1610. Her father died in 1601. Sources also refer to her as Baroness Rockingham whereas she died some eleven years before her husband was created Baron Rockingham. She married 1609 Lewis Watson 1st Baron Rockingham.

In 1598 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 42] was appointed Warden of the East Marches and Governor of Berwick on Tweed.

On 25th June 1601 Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby [aged 45] died at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland [Map] where he was Governor. His son Robert [aged 18] succeeded 14th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. He was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map].

On 15th February 1610 Catherine Bertie [aged 15] died in childbirth. She was buried at St James' Church, Spilsby [Map].

Catherine Bertie: Around 1595 she was born to Peregrine Bertie 13th Baron Willoughby and Mary Vere Baroness Willoughby of Eresby.
