On 3rd January 1540 Anne of Cleves [aged 24] arrived at Blackheath, Greenwich [Map]. Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 23] carried the Sword of State. William Holles [aged 69], Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 56], Robert Radclyffe 1st Earl of Sussex [aged 57], [his father] John de Vere 15th Earl of Oxford [aged 69], John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford [aged 24], Bishop Robert Parfew aka Warton and Catherine Willoughby Duchess Suffolk [aged 20] were present.
On 21st March 1540 [his father] John de Vere 15th Earl of Oxford [aged 69] died. His son John [aged 24] succeeded 16th Earl of Oxford. [his wife] Dorothy Neville Countess of Oxford by marriage Countess of Oxford.
Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 1st August 1548 John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford [aged 32] and Margery Golding Countess of Oxford [aged 22] were married at Belchamp St Paul, Essex. She by marriage Countess of Oxford. He the son of John de Vere 15th Earl of Oxford and Elizabeth Trussell Countess of Oxford.
On 12th April 1550 [his son] Edward de Vere 17th Earl of Oxford was born to John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford [aged 34] and [his wife] Margery Golding Countess of Oxford [aged 24]. He married 1. Anne Cecil Countess of Oxford, daughter of William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley and Mildred Cooke Baroness Burghley, and had issue 2. before 27th December 1591 Elizabeth TrenthamCountess of Oxford and had issue.
Before 2nd February 1559 [his son-in-law] Edward Windsor 3rd Baron Windsor [aged 27] and Katherine Vere Baroness Windsor [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Baroness Windsor of Stanwell in Buckinghamshire. She the daughter of John de Vere 16th Earl of Oxford [aged 43] and Dorothy Neville Countess of Oxford.
Henry Machyn's Diary. 5th October 1559. [The] v day of October cam to [London by Ald]gatt the prynse of Sweythen [aged 25], and [so to Leadenhall], and done [down] Gracyous-strett [Map] corner in a howse stod [the lord] marques of Northamtun [aged 47] and my lord Ambros Dudley [aged 29] [and other gentlemen and] lades; and my lord of Oxford [aged 43] browth (him) from Col[chester] [Map] and my lord Robart Dudley [aged 27], the master of the quen('s) horse; and trumpettes bloyng in dyvers places; and thay had [a great] nombur of gentyllmen ryd with cheynes a-for them, and after them a ij C [200] of yomen rydyng, and so rydyng over the bryge unto the bysshope of Wynchastur plasse [Map], for [it] was rychely hangyd with ryche cloth of arres, wrought with gold and sylver and sylke, and ther he remanyth.
On 1st January 1562 the New Years Gift Giving was held. Those who gave gifts provide an interesting who's who of the Elizabethan Court soon after Elizabeth I's Coronation. Queen Elizabeth [aged 28] was present since a number are described as "With the Qene her Majestie."

Lady Margaret Strange married Henry Stanley Lord Strange [aged 30] on 07 Feb 1555. In 1561 he had not succeeded to Earldom of Derby and was known by the courtesy title Lord Strange. She is listed first since she was one of the few remaining direct descendants of Henry VII, being a great-granddaughter by his daughter Mary Tudor. Margaret Clifford was first in line to succeed in 1568 but died in 1596 before Elizabeth I.

The xxxj day of August was bered in Essex the good erle of Oxford [deceased], with iij haroldes of armes, master Garter [aged 52], master Lancostur, master Rychmond, with a standard and a grett baner of armes, and viij baner-rolles, [helmet,] crest, targett, and sword, and cott armur, and a herse with velvett [and a] palle of velvett, and a x dosen of skochyons, [and with] mony mornars in blake, and grett mone mad for hym.

"This John Vere, erl of Oxford, dysseased at his castell of Hemyngham [Map] in Essex on Monday the 3. of August, in the 4. yere of the quene our soveraigne lady Elizabeth, &c. 1562, and was beryed on tewsday the 25. of August next enshewing, at the parishe churche of Hemyngham. He married firstDoraty, doughter of Raff erle of Westmerland, and had issue Kateren wyff to Edward lord Wyndesor; secondly, Margery doughter of Golding, syster to sir Thomas Goldinge, and had issue Edward erl of Oxford, and Mary."
