This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

In 1573 [his son] Theophilius Finch 2nd Baronet was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 23] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 16].
On 28th February 1574 [his daughter] Anne Finch Lady Twysden was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 24] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 17]. She married before 21st August 1597 William Twysden 1st Baronet and had issue.
In 1576 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 26] was appointed MP Weymouth.
In 1576 [his son] Heneage Finch was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 26] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 19].
On 13th June 1578 Thomas Finch 2nd Earl Winchilsea was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 28] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 21]. He married 1609 his fifth cousin Cecily Wentworth Countess Winchelsea and had issue.
In 1580 Heneage Finch was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 30] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 23]. He married 1. after 1607 his half fifth cousin once removed Frances Bell and had issue 2. 16th April 1629 Elizabeth Craddock and had issue.
In 1584 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 34] was knighted.
On 9th February 1585 [his mother] Katherine Moyle [aged 56] died.
Around 1588 [his daughter] Catherine Finch Lady Wentworth was born to Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 38] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 31]. She married in or before 1601 her fifth cousin John Wentworth 1st Baronet and had issue.
In 1593 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 43] was appointed MP Kent.
In 1596 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 46] was appointed High Sheriff of Kent.
Before 21st August 1597 [his son-in-law] William Twysden 1st Baronet [aged 31] and Anne Finch Lady Twysden [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 47] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 41].
In or before 1601 [his son-in-law] John Wentworth 1st Baronet [aged 17] and Catherine Finch Lady Wentworth [aged 12] were married. She the daughter of Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 50] and Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 44]. They were fifth cousins.
In 1601 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 51] was appointed MP Winchelsea.
In 1605 Moyle Finch 1st Baronet [aged 55] was appointed High Sheriff of Kent.

On 23rd March 1634 Elizabeth Heneage 1st Countess Winchelsea [aged 77] died. Her son Thomas [aged 55] succeeded 2nd Earl Winchilsea, 2nd Viscount Maidstone. Cecily Wentworth Countess Winchelsea [aged 40] by marriage Countess Winchilsea.
