In 1708 Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth was born to John Mordaunt [aged 27] and Frances Powlett.

In 1708 [his father] John Mordaunt [aged 27] and [his mother] Frances Powlett were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton [aged 47] and [his grandmother] Frances Ramsden. He the son of Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth [aged 50] and Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth [aged 48]. They were fourth cousins.

On 5th April 1710 [his father] John Mordaunt [aged 29] died.

In 1715 [his mother] Frances Powlett died.

On 13th November 1727 Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 19] commenced his education at Balliol College, Oxford University.

Before 1735 Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 26] and Mary Cox Countess Peterborough and Monmouth were married. She by marriage Countess Peterborough, Countess Monmouth.

On 25th October 1735 [his grandfather] Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth [aged 77] died. His grandson Charles [aged 27] succeeded 4th Earl Peterborough, 2nd Earl Monmouth, 9th Baron Mordaunt, 3rd Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon, 3rd Baron Mordaunt of Reigate.

In 1736 [his daughter] Caroline Mordaunt died. She was buried at St Mary and Christ Church, Hendon Barnet.

On 29th December 1736 [his daughter] Frances Mordaunt was born to Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 28] and [his wife] Mary Cox Countess Peterborough and Monmouth. She married 10th October 1765 Reverend Samuel Bulkeley.

On 25th June 1738 [his daughter] Mary Anastasia Grace Mordaunt 11th Baroness Mordaunt was born to Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 30] and [his wife] Mary Cox Countess Peterborough and Monmouth.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Before 30th January 1752 [his illegitimate daughter] Harriat Mordaunt was born illegitimately to Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 44] and [his future wife] Robiana Brown.

Before 11th June 1753 [his illegitimate son] Harriat Mordaunt was born illegitimately to Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 45] and [his future wife] Robiana Brown.

Before 11th June 1753 [his illegitimate daughter] Harriat Mordaunt [aged 1] died.

In 1755 Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 47] and Robiana Brown were married. She by marriage Countess Peterborough, Countess Monmouth.

In 1755 [his wife] Mary Cox Countess Peterborough and Monmouth died.

On 11th May 1758 [his son] Charles Henry Mordaunt 5th Earl Peterborough 3rd Earl Monmouth was born to Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 50] and [his wife] Robiana Brown.

The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 10th October 1765 [his son-in-law] Reverend Samuel Bulkeley [aged 35] and Frances Mordaunt [aged 28] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. She the daughter of Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 57] and Mary Cox Countess Peterborough and Monmouth.

On 1st August 1779 Charles Mordaunt 4th Earl Peterborough 2nd Earl Monmouth [aged 71] died. His son Charles [aged 21] succeeded 5th Earl Peterborough, 3rd Earl Monmouth, 10th Baron Mordaunt, 4th Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon, 4th Baron Mordaunt of Reigate.

In 1794 [his former wife] Robiana Brown died.
